Meet Karin Tyrer!

Karint with her family at the wedding of her son Braden

This month's issue features Karin Tyrer, a dedicated member of the City Council since 2022. Dive into the interview below to discover more about her and her family.

What inspired your decision to pursue a role as a City Council Member?
"I have always served my community, wherever I have lived. I was taught by example by my very active and involved parents! In the past, I have served Anchorage via the school on the APTA  Auction committee, chairing Christmas in Anchorage and volunteering in classrooms teaching Junior Great Books and Junior Achievement. Later, I worked for three years on the Anchorage Civic Club, serving the final year as president. I have also been president of the Anchorage Botanical Society. Once I rolled off Civic Club, I was asked to serve on a committee at City Hall developing a new city website and converting the printed Anchor Age newsletter to email format. I enjoyed those projects and working with the people at City Hall. I have always wanted to run for public office, so I decided to run for City Council. I was also inspired by the examples of Cece Hagan and Diane Cook who have served our city so well on City Council."

Tell us about your family:
"My husband, Brad, and I have been married for 31 years.  We have two sons who grew up in Anchorage and graduated from Anchorage School. Braden is 28, married to Lindsay Tyrer, and lives in Columbia, MO. Truman is 25 and is in his third year of Dental School at UK.  We also have one spicy kitty, Luly."

Tell us about your education and career path:
"I graduated from the University of Minnesota with a BA in Journalism, then went into public relations. I had my dream job in Minneapolis representing national food and beauty clients like General Mills, Land O' Lakes, Keri Lotion, and Excedrin. Then, I married my husband and began moving around the country as he moved up in his career in medical sales. Through that time, I worked in corporate relations for The Principal Financial Group and headed Group Insurance marketing communications for Mutual of Omaha. Later, here in Anchorage, I had a marketing communications consulting business. Now, I use all those marketing skills and more as a Realtor with RE/MAX Properties East and I love it!"

What's your favorite part about your community and/or serving Anchorage?
"Anchorage is a very special, very beautiful community. I love the beautiful setting, bridges, trees, homes, school, traditions, and people. It is my privilege to serve my neighbors as one of their representatives on City Council to preserve Anchorage's heritage and charm, and improve things where we can."

Hobbies and passions:
I love yoga and I practice 3-4 times a week. I cook daily, enjoy reading, love to travel internationally with Brad, and go downhill skiing with my family when I can!  I hope to get back into oil painting this year, as well.

We appreciate your commitment and for generously sharing insights into your life with the community!
