Showing Up: How One Ansley Park Neighbor Is Helping Change Lives

A Commitment That Lasts
Every Monday afternoon, while many people are wrapping up another workday or heading home to relax, Ansley Park resident John Fenton is settling into a classroom in northwest Atlanta. Across the table sits a fifth-grade student—sometimes eager, sometimes distracted, and sometimes carrying burdens far beyond what any child should have to shoulder.
For the next hour, John listens, encourages, asks questions, works through homework, and offers something that can't be measured on a report card: consistency.
John has volunteered as a tutor at Agape Youth & Family Center for the past 15 years. It wasn't a role he sought for recognition. His church was involved with Agape's tutoring program, and he was looking for a meaningful way to serve the community. What began as a volunteer opportunity soon became a lasting commitment to helping children build confidence, strengthen their academic skills, and believe in their own potential.
Today, John has called Ansley Park home for nine years. While he appreciates the neighborhood's beautiful parks, walkability, and central location, what he values most is its strong sense of community. For him, community isn't defined by neighborhood boundaries. It's about investing in people wherever the need exists.
The Power of Simply Showing Up
"I've learned that just continuing to show up matters," John says.
That simple philosophy has guided hundreds of afternoons spent working with students who are navigating one of the most important—and often most challenging—stages of childhood.
Working with fifth graders comes with its share of challenges. They're on the cusp of becoming teenagers, discovering who they are while trying to navigate school, friendships, and life at home. John knows every child has a different story, and many of the students he tutors face obstacles that extend well beyond the classroom.
Some are dealing with financial hardship. Others come from unstable family situations. All benefit from knowing that someone is willing to invest time in them, week after week.
John believes academic success is only part of the equation. Building confidence, offering encouragement, and providing a dependable adult presence can be just as important. By helping students strengthen their educational foundation, he hopes to increase their opportunities to stay engaged in school and pursue brighter futures.
More Than an After-School Program
That philosophy of long-term commitment is also what makes Agape Youth & Family Center so unique.
For nearly 30 years, Agape has served children and families in northwest Atlanta with a mission to empower them through educational excellence, family strengthening, and community engagement. Rather than offering one-time assistance, Agape builds relationships that often span 10 to 15 years, walking alongside students from elementary school through high school graduation and into adulthood.
Students first connect with Agape through after-school tutoring and summer enrichment programs designed to strengthen academic skills while fostering confidence and character. As they grow, the organization continues supporting them through middle and high school with college and career readiness programming that helps prepare them for life after graduation.
For many young adults, that support doesn't end with a diploma.
Through Navigate, Agape's college and career program, high school students and alumni receive guidance as they pursue their post-secondary pathways in college, technical training, military service, or careers. The organization also provides family engagement with parent education, case management, wellness programming, and community resources that strengthen entire families, while also offering engagement opportunities for senior citizens through its daytime program.
It's a holistic approach built on one belief: lasting transformation happens when people have trusted relationships that continue over time.
A Story of Hope
One example of that long-term investment is Azalia T.
Azalia first joined Agape as an elementary school student and remained connected to the organization throughout her educational journey. After graduating from North Atlanta High School in 2024, she enrolled in college but soon realized it wasn't the right path for her.
Rather than allowing that setback to define her future, Agape helped her discover a new direction.
Through the Navigate program, Azalia found a passion for dentistry and enrolled in Austell Dental Assistant School. While working part-time to pay her tuition, Agape stepped in to help bridge the remaining financial gap so she could complete the program.
She graduated with a remarkable 93% final exam score and is now beginning her career as a dental assistant.
Her journey is a powerful reminder that success isn't always a straight line. Sometimes all it takes is someone willing to walk beside you until you find your path.
Creating a Lasting Impact
Agape's impact extends far beyond individual success stories.
Since 2009, 103 students have graduated from Agape's program. Today, the organization supports more than 100 high school students through college and career readiness initiatives, while the Navigate program continues helping young adults pursue higher education and meaningful careers.
Each year, more than 1,000 volunteers invest their time through tutoring, mentoring, event support, and community engagement. Perhaps the greatest measure of success is that many former students eventually return to Agape as volunteers and mentors themselves, creating a cycle of encouragement that spans generations.
For John, those numbers are certainly meaningful, but they aren't what keep him coming back every week.
It's watching a student gain confidence after mastering a difficult assignment.
It's seeing a child begin to believe in themselves.
It's knowing that one hour of undivided attention can leave a lasting impression.
How You Can Make a Difference
John's story is a reminder that changing a life doesn't always require extraordinary resources or endless free time. Often, it begins with a willingness to show up consistently for someone who needs encouragement.
Whether tutoring a student, mentoring a young adult, volunteering at community events, or supporting educational programming through a financial contribution, there are countless ways to become part of Agape's mission.
After 15 years of service, John has discovered that the greatest impact is rarely made through a single act. Instead, it's built one conversation, one lesson, one relationship, and one opportunity at a time.
Because sometimes, the greatest gift we can give another person is simply letting them know they don't have to walk alone.
