Blazing New Trails: Savannah’s Trail Mix Mountain Bike Team Takes the Lead

When you think of “Athlete of the Month,” you might picture a single star performer. But this month, we’re spotlighting a whole team of trailblazers—Savannah Trail Mix, also known as Savannah Composite, our city’s own scholastic mountain bike team. These young riders are proving that grit, balance, and a love for the outdoors can take you far—sometimes at top speed down a rocky trail.
Savannah Trail Mix competes in Georgia Cycling’s scholastic mountain bike race series, a fall league for student-athletes in grades 6–12. While many schools in the Atlanta area have their own programs, Savannah’s riders first came together as a composite team about five years ago, thanks to local rider Luca Klaras. What began with a single student racing independently has grown into a team of determined athletes who now represent Savannah on courses across the state.
This year’s roster includes Nico Klaras and James McCarn racing in the JV2 class, Michael Grabowski, Grant Loiselle, and Ben Perkins in JV1. Together, they’re tackling tough courses, testing their endurance, and creating memories that will stick long after the season ends.
Racing for the Rush
For many of these riders, mountain biking started with family or friends. Nico Klaras recalls, “I got into mountain bike racing from watching my older brother do it and also doing some of the local races here like Marsh Madness at Skidaway.” His favorite memory? Winning the team relay at the state championship.
Teammate James McCarn says, “I’ve had a bike almost since I was old enough to walk. I learned to jump, ride wheelies, and just have fun… I’ve definitely gotten a lot better since the first practice. I am happy to have finished in the top 10 in the first 2 races and hope to have a podium finish by the end of the season.”
Michael Grabowski loves the mix of exploration and camaraderie: “I like how every trail is different. We form bonds not only with our own teammates, but with riders from across the state. I hope to race in college and to always continue exploring new trails.”
The Bigger Picture
The riders’ families and coaches are just as inspired as the athletes themselves. James’ dad, Mike McCarn, says, “Watching the competition has been great fun… I would encourage any young person that enjoys cycling to consider the series.”
For Michael’s mom, Denise Grabowski, it’s about more than racing: “As a mom, I love not only how active it keeps him, but also the friendships he’s made through the sport. Georgia Cycling always promotes good sportsmanship above all. It is such a positive environment for all of the youth involved.”
Head coaches Mike Grabowski and John Klaras share the same passion. Coach Grabowski says, “All of our riders are amazing athletes. They devote an unbelievable amount of hours and miles training year-round, for a two-month race season in the fall. Their drive, commitment, and camaraderie keep me coming back each year.”
Hit the Trails Yourself
Mountain biking isn’t just for state competitors—it’s a sport anyone can try. Savannah has more than 20 miles of dedicated trails at Priest’s Landing on Skidaway, Joseph Tribble Park, and the YMCA on Whitemarsh. As Ben Perkins puts it, “It’s a great way to see nature and it is extremely entertaining.”
Whether they’re racing down steep trails, grinding through long laps, or simply riding for fun, the athletes of Savannah Trail Mix show what makes mountain biking so addictive—the freedom of the ride, the rush of competition, and the friendships forged along the way. Their story is proof that anyone can find adventure on two wheels, right here in Savannah.
