Pet of the Month: Meet Moose, the Gentle Giant of BackCountry
If you’ve ever taken an early morning walk along the scenic trails of BackCountry and spotted what looks like a small horse trotting gracefully beside his owner, chances are you’ve met Moose, one of the community’s most beloved residents. Standing nearly three feet tall at the shoulder and weighing in at an impressive 165 pounds, Moose is a Great Dane with an even bigger heart.
At first glance, Moose is impossible to miss. His sleek blue-gray coat glistens in the Colorado sunshine, and his long legs and regal posture give him an unmistakable presence. But despite his towering size, neighbors quickly learn that Moose is anything but intimidating. In fact, he is known throughout BackCountry as a calm, affectionate, and surprisingly gentle companion who has a special talent for making people smile.
“Everyone assumes he must be fierce because he’s so large,” says his owner, Sarah, who has lived in BackCountry for six years. “But Moose thinks he’s a lap dog. He loves children, cuddles, and getting as much attention as possible.”
Moose joined the family four years ago when they brought him home as an eight-week-old puppy. Even then, his paws were enormous, a clear indication that he was destined to become a giant. What Sarah didn’t expect was just how quickly Moose would become an integral part of both her family and the neighborhood.
From his earliest days, Moose showed a remarkable sense of gentleness. As a puppy, he carefully tiptoed around Sarah’s young daughter, Lily, and would lie beside her during story time. Today, the two remain inseparable. Whether they’re playing in the backyard, hiking neighborhood trails, or relaxing on the couch, Moose is always close by.
“Lily tells everyone that Moose is her best friend,” Sarah says. “And honestly, I think he feels the same way.”
Moose’s daily routine is a familiar sight to many BackCountry residents. Each morning begins with a leisurely walk through the community’s winding paths, where he stops frequently to greet fellow dog walkers and accept pats from admirers. Despite his size, Moose is known for his impeccable manners. He walks calmly on leash, waits patiently at crosswalks, and sits politely whenever someone asks if they can say hello.
Children are particularly drawn to Moose, who seems to understand that his large stature can be awe-inspiring. He lowers his head to their level and stands perfectly still while they stroke his velvety ears.
“He has an incredible sense of how to be gentle,” says neighbor Karen. “The first time my grandson met him, he was a little nervous. Within five minutes, they were best buddies.”
When he’s not serving as BackCountry’s unofficial canine ambassador, Moose enjoys the comforts of home. His favorite activities include sunbathing on the patio, chasing tennis balls (though he rarely brings them back), and sneaking onto the couch when he thinks no one is looking. He also has a well-known weakness for peanut butter and will perform an enthusiastic “sit” at the mere mention of the word.
Like many Great Danes, Moose combines athleticism with an appreciation for relaxation. After a good walk, he is perfectly content to spend the afternoon napping, often stretched across a dog bed that appears far too small to contain him.
Great Danes are often referred to as “gentle giants,” and Moose is a textbook example of the breed’s affectionate and loyal nature. Originally bred in Germany, Great Danes are known for their imposing size, intelligence, and deep bonds with their families. Moose embodies all of these traits, along with a distinctly playful personality that keeps his family entertained.
One of Sarah’s favorite memories occurred during a winter snowstorm when Moose bounded through fresh powder with childlike excitement, launching himself into drifts and emerging with snow covering his face. “He looked so dignified and ridiculous at the same time,” she laughs.
For many residents, Moose represents one of the qualities that makes BackCountry such a special place: a sense of connection. In a neighborhood known for its beautiful landscapes and close-knit community, Moose has become a friendly and familiar face who brings people together.
Whether he is strolling along the trails, lounging in the sun, or offering a reassuring nuzzle to a young friend, Moose reminds us that the biggest members of our community often have the softest hearts.
Congratulations to Moose, our BackCountry Pet of the Month. Your gentle spirit, loving nature, and larger-than-life personality have earned you a well-deserved place in the spotlight.
