For more than 50 years, Dancers Workshop has been a home away from home for Northwest Austin families. Founded in 1974 by Dawn Weiss, the studio was built on a simple but powerful vision: to provide excellent dance education while helping children grow into confident, kind, and capable young people. Today, that same vision continues to guide everything the studio does, now under the leadership of its longtime director, who has spent the past 23 years dedicated to the craft.

"I've had the privilege of serving as a dance educator and director of Dancers Workshop for the past 23 years, and I truly can't imagine doing anything else," she shares. As a mother raising her own two daughters in Austin alongside her husband, Henry, she understands firsthand what families are looking for when choosing activities for their children. "We all want a place where our children feel known, supported, challenged, and excited to come back each week."

That philosophy has made Dancers Workshop a fixture in Northwest Austin, with generations of families from Balcones Woods, Northwest Hills, and surrounding neighborhoods trusting the studio with their children's dance education. The studio offers classes for ages 2 through adult, including ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, contemporary, pointe, stretch and strength, acro, preschool combo classes, creative movement, and adaptive dance for children with special needs. There are also summer camps, drop-in classes, and pre-professional training available. Dancers Workshop is also home to three standout performance groups: Ovation, a youth ballet company that stages a full production of The Nutcracker every December; DWPT, a Recreational Competitive Company; and CCDC, a PreProfessional Competitive Company.

What truly sets the studio apart, though, isn't its list of programs, it's the relationships built along the way. "Over the years, we've watched children grow up, graduate, head off to college, start careers, and eventually bring their own children through our doors," the director explains. Alumni have gone on to become professional dancers, teachers, doctors, engineers, business owners, and parents, but many say the same thing: the confidence, discipline, and friendships they built at Dancers Workshop stayed with them long after they hung up their dance shoes. Many former students remain part of the studio community today as parents, staff members, and mentors.

Like so many small businesses, Dancers Workshop faced real challenges during the pandemic. But the experience strengthened its resolve. Since then, the studio has invested even more in curriculum, teacher training, and family communication, always asking how to better serve the families who trust them.

Looking ahead, the studio's new season begins this August, with enrollment already underway for dancers ages 2 and up. One especially exciting milestone is the launch of a brand-new competitive dance company in partnership with Magellan International School this fall, bringing quality dance training directly into a school community.

For parents considering activities for their children, the director offers this advice: "Look beyond the activity itself and pay attention to the environment. Children thrive when they're surrounded by adults who know them, believe in them, and encourage them to keep growing." And for kids just starting out, natural talent matters far less than heart. "The dancers who grow the most aren't always the ones who start with the most ability. They're the ones who love learning and who keep showing up."

Families agree. As one parent, Jennifer B., puts it: "We were looking for more than dance classes. We wanted a community. Dancers Workshop has exceeded every expectation."

After more than 50 years serving Northwest Austin, Dancers Workshop is just as excited about the next generation as it was the first.
