Cade Johnson Excels on the Field and in the Classroom

Cade Johnson, a senior at Cabell Midland High School, has spent the past 18 years surrounded by the support of his family, including his parents, Evan and Lisa Johnson, and his younger sister, Cami, a sophomore at CMHS. Living in the Wildwood Oaks neighborhood of Ona, Cade has developed a strong passion for baseball while also building an impressive academic and leadership résumé.

A standout centerfielder and pitcher for the Knights, Cade has been playing baseball since he was just 4 years old after his parents signed him up for T-ball. “I loved it from day one,” Cade shared with Stroll Barboursville. “Baseball has always been something I’ve enjoyed because of the competition, the friendships, and the memories that come with it.”

Over the past 14 years, Cade has experienced success at nearly every level of the game. His accomplishments include being named All-State during his sophomore year, winning back-to-back WV State Championships with Cabell Midland High School in 2023 and 2024, and capturing Little League state titles with Barboursville Little League in both 2017 and 2018. He was also recently honored as Prom King and received several prestigious scholarships, including the Promise Scholarship, the Getting Started Scholarship from Marshall University, and the Robby Moss Scholarship.

Despite the awards and championships, Cade says his favorite part of baseball is the relationships he has built over the years. “The laughs we share at practice and in the clubhouse are something I’ll always remember,” he said. “I also love how our team never gives up, no matter what the situation is.”

Cade credits Coach Tracy Brumfield as one of the biggest influences in his athletic career. “Coach Brumfield has always believed in me and given me opportunities to prove myself,” Cade said. “Having someone who pushes you and trusts you makes a huge difference.”

One of his favorite memories came during Cabell Midland’s 2024 state championship season. “Winning the state championship my sophomore year was an unforgettable moment,” he said. “That feeling of celebrating with your teammates after all the hard work is something special.”
Through baseball, Cade says he has learned valuable life lessons that extend far beyond the field. “One thing baseball has taught me is not to ride the highs too long because you can get humbled in a hurry,” he explained. “It keeps you focused and grounded.”

After graduation, Cade plans to attend Marshall University to major in Pre-Med/Biology before pursuing medical school. While his future goals are ambitious, he remains thankful for the sport that helped shape him into the person he is today.

For younger athletes hoping to succeed in baseball, Cade offers simple but meaningful advice. “The hard work comes in the off-season,” he said. “That’s where you really prepare yourself to improve.”
