The Pottery Place

For Jessica Stone, clay has always felt like home.

Jessica, owner of The Pottery Place in Huntington and Hurricane, grew up on the south side of Huntington before moving to Hurricane in the 1990s, where she finished high school. After earning her degree in ceramics from Marshall University, life took her and her husband to Michigan for five years. It was there they welcomed their first child, Lola. Eventually, the Tri-State called them back home, where they added Milo to the family and settled in for good.

Once her children were school-age, Jessica returned to work and found herself at The Pottery Place under its previous owner. “I started sweeping floors, mixing paint, helping customers,” Jessica said. “I loved it from the beginning. When the owner decided to retire, I bought it. There wasn’t some big master plan. It just felt right.”

Today, Jessica owns both locations, one on 3rd Avenue in Huntington and the other on Teays Valley Road in Hurricane. The concept is simple and inviting: paint your own ceramics. Customers walk in, choose a piece, and create something uniquely their own.

“We’re not some stuffy art class,” Jessica explained. “It’s come as you are. No pressure, no right or wrong way. Just let loose, paint what you feel, and make memories that stick.”

That relaxed, welcoming atmosphere is what sets The Pottery Place apart. Over the years, the studio has hosted first dates, birthday parties, family outings, and special moments between grandparents and grandchildren. Jessica believes the magic lies in the freedom to create.
“That freedom turns clay into connection,” she said.

Jessica is quick to credit her team for helping create that environment. Melissa, the Hurricane location’s manager, recently joined the team and brings warmth and enthusiasm to every session.

“She loves kids and turns every visit into a little adventure,” Jessica shared. “The rest of our staff has been with us through kiln jams, glitter spills, and everything in between. They’re like family.”

Rachel Horn, a local resident of Teays Valley shared, “My 5-year-old and I love to visit the Pottery Place! It’s a great hands-on, screen-free, fun activity for little ones. Such an awesome place where kids can be creative, have fun, and express themselves. We love it! “ Dru Morgan of Hurricane added,  “Our youngest is very artistic, and we are blessed to have an outlet for her so close to home. She can’t wait to pick up her pottery and display it in our home every time we go! "

At home, creativity continues. Lola often stops by after school and grabs a brush without hesitation, while Milo dreams of running the kiln room someday. “They both think Mom’s job is just fun,” Jessica said with a smile. “Honestly, they’re right.”

Jessica’s advice to the community is simple. “Take ten minutes and let your hands wander,” she shared. “Paint a flower, swirl some glaze, shape a little dream. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Life blooms in the quiet, messy corners. Sometimes all it takes is one brushstroke to remind you.”

With open studio hours Monday through Saturday from noon to nine and Sunday from noon to six, The Pottery Place welcomes walk-ins, no appointment needed.
