Carson Kohl: Grounded in Family, Driven to Win

At just 17 years old, Carson Kohl is already balancing responsibilities that many adults are still learning to manage. A senior at Cabell Midland High School, Carson lives with his family at Tannehill Farms, where they’ve called home for the past ten years. Family is at the center of his life and includes his father, Bob Kohl; his mother, Kimberly Kohl; his older sister, Kaylee, 18; and his younger sister, Kamryn, 12. Together, they also share in the operation of the family’s newest venture, the Olde Library Tavern, recently opened in the Village of Barboursville, where Carson works alongside his parents while learning the ins and outs of the business.

Carson has been wrestling since sixth grade, when he first stepped onto the mat at Milton Middle School. What began as an extracurricular activity quickly became a defining part of who he is today. “I would not be anywhere near the person I am today without wrestling,” Carson shared with Stroll Barboursville. “There’s no hiding who wants it more in this sport; the person who works harder will always come out ahead.”

Earlier this year, Carson earned first place at the MSAC Regional Conference, defeating two opponents who were seeded above him. Another major milestone came early in the season when he reached 100 career high school wins, an achievement he had been working toward since his freshman year. “That was something I’ve thought about and looked forward to for a long time,” Carson said.

What sets Carson apart in wrestling is not only his skill but his determination to keep pushing, even in tough moments. “I keep wrestling hard even when I’m down by points,” he explained. “You never know when your opponent might mess up, and you have to be ready to take advantage of it.”

One of Carson’s favorite memories came during his junior year at the Tennessee Rocky Mountain Duals, when he defeated the Kentucky State Champion. “The whole team was cheering, and everyone was so excited,” he recalled. “It’s something I’ll always remember.”

Despite the demands of wrestling, school, and work, Carson understands the importance of balance. He makes time to rest both physically and mentally and enjoys spending time with friends and his girlfriend. Working for his family business also provides flexibility during wrestling season, allowing him to stay focused while still helping at the restaurant.

After graduation, Carson plans to stay in the Barboursville area and continue managing Olde Library Tavern, with the long-term goal of inheriting the business from his father. While college is not part of his plan, building a future rooted in family and hard work is.

He credits much of his motivation to his mother. “She’s always there for me and never doubts me,” he said. “She shows me how to get through tough situations and reminds me to keep my head up.”

Carson Kohl continues to prove that success is built through commitment, both on the mat and at home.
