Hannah McComas: Flipping Toward a Bright Future

Hannah McComas has called the East Mud neighborhood home for all 18 years of her life, growing up with her parents, Leah and Kevin McComas, and her two older brothers, Caleb and Nathan. Now a senior at Cabell Midland High School, Hannah is preparing to take her next steps toward her future at Marshall University, where she plans to pursue a nursing degree while continuing her passion for cheer at the collegiate level.
Hannah’s cheerleading journey began when she was just four years old. "I always told my mom I wanted to do ‘flip flop’ class," she shared with Stroll Barboursville. Her natural talent quickly became evident, and by the time she was seven, she had nearly mastered a full twisting layout. From there, her love for cheerleading only grew, leading her to participate in high school cheer, the game day team, the high school competition team, and all-star cheer.
Throughout her cheer career, Hannah has achieved remarkable milestones. She made the varsity team as a freshman and was part of the competition team all four years. Her sophomore year was especially memorable when her team won regionals. By her junior year, her game day squad had qualified for Disney, finishing 11th in the nation. Her all-star team has also been dominant, winning every competition except one and earning a bid to compete at Summit in Disney this May. "I love how as soon as I hit the mat, all my worries go away. The cheer gym is a home away from home and an escape from reality," Hannah said.
One of Hannah’s biggest strengths in cheerleading is her tumbling. Coaches consistently rely on her to execute difficult passes, making her a crucial asset to every routine. But her success isn’t just about skill—it’s also about dedication and balance. Managing school, college classes, work, and cheer requires intense focus and discipline. "Balancing everything isn’t for the weak, but it’s not impossible. I set goals for myself and hold myself to a high standard," she explained.
Hannah shared this now funny memory, “During my first all-star competition, I had to compete at 8 am, and I drank a Monster Energy drink. When I went out to perform, my nerves were everywhere, and I couldn’t feel my hands or legs, and ended up falling on my face.”
Despite her busy schedule, Hannah always finds time to appreciate the people who have supported her along the way. "I admire my whole family and coaches for pushing me to be a better version of myself and believing in me when no one else does," she said. "Without my mom and dad, I wouldn’t be where I am today. And every coach I’ve had has taught me something valuable."
With her unwavering determination and passion, there’s no doubt she will make an impact both on and off the mat.
