The Mooney Family’s Story of Home, Community, and Tradition

For the Mooney family of Walkers Pointe Road, Barboursville isn’t just home—it’s where their roots run deep. Chad and Stephanie Mooney have lived in the neighborhood for 13 years, raising their three daughters—Riley (20), Sydney (14), and Eva (11)—alongside their beloved pets, Benny Walter the dog and Chloe the cat.
Chad grew up in Pea Ridge, while Stephanie is a Barboursville native. The two first crossed paths at Barboursville High School but didn’t start dating until years later. “We reconnected after college at a summer party,” Stephanie shared with Stroll Barboursville. “Our first official date was on the Fourth of July, watching fireworks from my family’s boat on the Ohio River. That night started it all.”
Chad, a Senior Regional Manager for Natural Resource Partners LP, holds a degree in Mining Engineering from WVU and an MBA from Morehead State. Before pursuing a nursing degree at Marshall University, Stephanie earned her B.S. in Biochemistry from Virginia Tech. Today, she works as a registered nurse at Cabell Huntington Hospital and Three Gables.
Family time for the Mooney Family often means heading to their cabin on the Greenbrier River, where they enjoy fishing, hiking, and floating on the water. “It’s our happy place in the warmer months,” said Stephanie. “We love traveling, entertaining family and friends, and staying active with our church community.” The family's favorite vacation destination is Destin, Florida.
The Mooneys’ passion for sports is evident in their favorite teams: the West Virginia Mountaineers, Virginia Tech Hokies, Chicago Cubs, and Pittsburgh Steelers. Their daughters have followed suit, staying active in both sports and academics. Riley is a junior at WVU, set to graduate in 2027. Sydney plays soccer for Cabell Midland High School and participates in the Science Olympiad team. Eva, a 6th grader at Barboursville Middle, sings in the choir and plays soccer as well. All three girls are involved with the Christ Presbyterian Church youth group.
When it comes to family traditions, the Mooneys go all out for the holidays. “Christmas is our favorite, but we have a special New Year’s tradition too,” Stephanie explained. “We make a corned beef and cabbage dinner with a piece of silver hidden inside. Whoever finds it is said to have good luck for the year.”
Neighbors may be surprised to learn that the entire family is artistically talented. “All of our girls are wonderful artists with paints, pencils, and charcoal. And Chad plays the guitar,” Stephanie added.
At home, Stephanie’s culinary talents shine with a variety of multicultural dishes. One family favorite is her shrimp and crab boil, a go-to meal for special gatherings.
But more than anything, the Mooneys cherish the sense of community they’ve found in Walkers Pointe. “That’s easy—our neighbors,”
Stephanie said. “We don’t just live beside people; we live beside friends. These are people we love and care for very much. You just don’t find that everywhere.”
The Mooney family’s story is one of connection—to each other, to their community, and to the place they proudly call home.
