Drive, Putt and Passion

Stephanie and Shawn Nelson moved to Bear Creek 19 years ago and love that they live just a few blocks from their grandchildren, Skyler (13) and Sloan (10) Granillo, both of whom have the drive and passion to be the world’s next best golfers!

Skyler and Sloan at the 2024 Drive Chip and Putt Competition

Skyler just turned 13 and Sloan just turned 10. Both are amazing individuals — beautiful inside and out and share a passion for golf. Both are scratch golfers and have been playing since they were 6 years old. Many members of the community tell us they see them playing on the course all of the time, and they love watching how talented they are!

They have competed in multiple tournament organizations, including USKids Golf, SDJGA, SCPGA, Future Champions Junior Golf and Notah Begay III. They have competed in countless State and Regional events, along with qualifying and competing for the Worlds Tournament in Pinehurst, North Carolina, and IMG Worlds in San Diego, California.

Skyler’s biggest accomplishment thus far is taking the title of the Arizona State Champion. His lowest round in a competition over 18 holes has been a bogey-free -5/67. His favorite club is his driver, as he consistently hits fairways at a statistic higher than most professionals.

Sloan’s biggest accomplishments thus far are three second-place State/ Regional finishes (’22 Arizona State, ’24 Desert Regional, ’24 Southern California State) with two additional top 5 finishes (’22 Northern California State, ’23 Monterey Regional). Her lowest round in a competition is -4/32 for 9 holes. She has just recently started playing 18 holes for larger competitions. Her favorite club in her bag is her putter. Her papa calls her the “Sassy-Assassin,” as she can putt like no one we’ve ever seen.

Skyler has made it to the Regional Drive Chip and Putt finals two times, and this year, it’s Sloan’s turn to compete in the Regional Drive, Chip & Putt, to be held in Kona, Hawaii. As a 10-year-old, she will be going against 11 other girls her age in their quest to secure the top place and make it to Augusta, Georgia, to complete the weekend before the Masters. We can’t wait to see what all these siblings will accomplish on and off the course!

A Family Affair
The whole family loves to play golf, especially with Skyler and Sloan. They also are busy with their family nonprofit, Jacob’s House, which is located in the Temecula Valley where they have helped over 1,400 guests from 42 states and 14 countries.
