Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat, UV-protective sunglasses, and sunscreen. Radiant heat from direct sunlight can make temperatures feel much hotter.

For plants, water deeply in the early morning so roots can absorb moisture before the day heats up. A general rule is to irrigate if there has been no rain for seven days, adjusting for plant type, sun exposure, and temperatures. Run irrigation before sunrise to minimize evaporation. Avoid wetting foliage, as this can encourage fungal diseases.

Use fertilizer sparingly and never apply it to lawns during the rainy season. Mulch helps retain soil moisture and suppresses weeds. If using neem oil, remember that temperatures above 90°F can cause plant damage, so apply diluted solutions early in the morning or after sunset.

Keep bird baths fresh by changing the water daily to prevent mosquito larvae from developing.

While many gardeners take a break from vegetables in August, consider planting heat-tolerant options next year, such as okra or native Everglades tomatoes, which thrive in Florida’s summer heat.
