Long before book clubs became the beloved social gatherings we know today, they sometimes carried a much more rebellious spirit. In the early 1600s, Anne Hutchinson gathered women in the Massachusetts Bay Colony to discuss sermons and theology, an act considered deeply unconventional at a time when intellectual engagement was largely reserved for men.

Thankfully, times have changed. Today, book clubs are places where ideas can be explored freely, friendships can grow, and people can gather around a shared love of stories.

At Bermuda Village, that spirit of connection is alive and well.

The Bermuda Village Book Club is a vibrant group of 17 members, including one gentleman, brought together by a love of reading and meaningful conversation. What began years ago as a small, invitation only gathering has grown into an open and welcoming community where all residents are invited to participate.

Over the years, members have explored a wide variety of literature, with a particular appreciation for historical fiction and memoirs. Books such as The Gilded Leaf, Clementine, Educated, and The Other Einstein have encouraged thoughtful discussion while offering new perspectives on history, resilience, and the human experience.

The way books are selected has evolved along with the club. Today, each member chooses a favorite book and leads the discussion during an assigned month. The format gives everyone an opportunity to bring personal insight and a unique perspective to the group, while also introducing fellow members to stories they might not have discovered on their own.

Those discussions are often every bit as memorable as the books themselves. Recent selections including The Frozen River, The Girls of Atomic City, The Women, and Born a Crime have inspired lively conversation, differing viewpoints, and moments of genuine connection.

The club’s success is also strengthened by a generous spirit of service. For members who are no longer able to visit the library, a dedicated volunteer makes sure books are delivered directly to their doors, including large print editions when available. Members are deeply grateful for that kindness, as well as for the continued support of the Clemmons Branch of the Forsyth County Public Library.

The experience extends beyond monthly book discussions as well. The club has welcomed local author Nancy Naigle and Bermuda Village residents Susie and Earl Williams for special readings and events, giving members and guests opportunities to connect with stories in new and personal ways.

Each year concludes with a festive Christmas luncheon, a chance to celebrate the friendships that have grown, reflect on the stories shared, and look forward to another year of reading together.

While the club has changed over time, its heart has remained the same. It is a place for curiosity, conversation, friendship, and growth.

At Bermuda Village, the book club is about much more than turning pages. It is about bringing people together.
