Smiles and Slam Dunks
Dr. Chambers' Dedication to Dentistry and Basketball
For the last four decades, Dr. William Chambers has called Biltmore Forest home all the while dedicating himself to crafting and preserving the radiant smiles of our youth. His endeavors in creating smiles for children and families has spanned from basketball courts to his dental office, leaving an indelible mark on Western North Carolina.
An alumnus of the renowned UNC Tar Heels basketball team during his undergraduate years, Dr. Chambers credits Coach Dean Smith with instilling valuable lessons that now permeate both his personal and professional life. Mirroring the vision of the Tarheel team that is to play smart, play hard, and play together, creating family and loyalty. Dr. Chambers fosters a culture of dedication and camaraderie in his business Great Smiles.
UNC Chapel Hill also led Dr. Chambers to his wife, Cathy, with whom he has shared forty-four years of marriage. The couple met at a local bar when she was in Undergrad and he was in his first year of dental school. After dating for six years, they were married. The Chambers have walked alongside one another through many life changes and accomplishments. Their family has grown to include four beloved grandchildren, and they delight in their family's shared love for Tar Heel games.
In the Asheville office of Great Smiles, there is a room dedicated to original Tar Heel memorabilia. The collection includes autographs, some from Hall of Famers like Bobby Jones and All Americans like Charlie Scott. Dr. Chambers says it is a fun and enjoyable space for Tar Heel fans.
Outside of the Tar Heels, Dr. Chambers has also made impressions in other basketball spheres. He has three children, Stephanie, Courtney, and Will. When they were old enough to start playing sports, Dr. Chambers found himself coaching South Buncombe Basketball. At the time, boys and girls were playing on the same team, the children were using 10 foot goals, and using full size balls. Dr. Chambers and a co- coach were told that if they wanted the basketball program to continue, it was up to them. Dr. Chambers quickly began making changes, lowering goals, using smaller balls, and changing the way they drafted players. When the process started, there were five or six teams. However, after years of hard work, when Dr. Chambers left, there were 72 teams and about 700 kids playing. Many of the changes implemented by him are still in use today. He also helped coach AU Women’s basketball, and still occasionally offers coaching to individual players.
Despite his notable achievements in basketball, Dr. Chambers' true passion lies in pediatric dentistry, a field to which he was drawn from an early age. In addition to being named after a family friend who was a dentist, Dr. Chamber's chose UNC Chapel Hill for the prestigious dental school, and attended there for all of his schooling.
Upon graduation, he established his own practice in Asheville that consisted of one dental hygienist, one front desk clerk, and himself. He has since expanded to six locations across Western North Carolina and seventh will be added this year. Driven by a desire to make quality dental care accessible, Dr. Chambers remains committed to embedding his offices within the local communities.
Distinguished by its local and private ownership, Great Smiles stands apart from other dental practices, offering round-the-clock care to meet the diverse needs of its patients. Dr. Chambers' unwavering commitment to community empowerment and youth development shines through his multifaceted contributions in basketball and dentistry, suggesting he is a wonderful business owner, great mentor, and an invaluable asset to our local community.
