Helpmate is working to address a critical need in the community: the need for more bed space in Buncombe County's only emergency shelter for survivors fleeing intimate partner violence.
April Burgess-Johnson, executive director of Helpmate, is on the final push to secure the funds needed to complete its new emergency shelter in Buncombe County. “Despite living in the largest and most resourced county in WNC, Buncombe County residents fleeing abuse often have to cross county lines and leave vital support systems and normalcy behind them to attain safe shelter,” she says.
Helpmate currently has 20 beds in its emergency shelter for a county of nearly 300,000 people. April says, “Construction has begun on our new emergency shelter, but we need your help to raise the final funds to complete the project.”
