Rebuilding and Remodeling
How to Hire Qualified Bathroom Remodeling Professionals
By Reben Werman, Owner, Two Day Bath & Shower
What do neighbors need to know about bathroom remodeling right now?
Rebuilding and renovating a home after a disaster is extremely overwhelming for anyone. Now more than ever, finding a reputable and caring company to complete renovations is very important while also helping to ensure the process goes as seamlessly as possible. Choose wisely with the following steps.
1. Look for a company you can trust.
While time is of the essence, the remodeling company you hire can mean the difference between a smooth recovery process or a total nightmare. The last thing you need is a company who runs off halfway through a project or a swindler who tries to rip off desperate homeowners. Do your homework by researching how long a company has been in business, call the business and visit their location.
2. Ask for references.
In addition to your insurance company’s recommendation, it’s always important to ask for references. An experienced company will be happy to provide these to you. Research the company online and check feedback on user review sites.
3. Make sure the company is licensed and insured.
Make sure you’re hiring a licensed and insured company. That way, if anything goes sideways, you are protected. Ask to see the company’s business license and insurance certificate.
4. Get a detailed estimate on costs and timeline.
Any trustworthy operation will understand a homeowner’s need to know how much the job will cost and how long they expect it to take. Be sure to get an estimate and review it carefully to make sure all the services discussed are listed. You should also ask about the timeline for completion, as this can be as important as the cost of repairs, especially if the damage requires you to stay elsewhere during the process.
5. Watch out for scammers, price gouging, high-pressure sales tactics and a lack of credentials.
Unfortunately, natural disasters attract opportunists looking to take advantage of desperate homeowners. Doing your research and asking questions will help you decide what is best for your needs. Look for a locally owned company with a positive reputation.

How to Hire the Right Flooring Business
By Brad Currin, Owner, WNC FCI Floors
When you have floor damage, understanding who is qualified to make assessments on repairing or rebuilding your floor is key to a quick recovery. Here are some tips to help you during the recovery process.
1. Assess damage.
Different flooring materials respond differently to flooding. Hardwood and laminate may warp or buckle, while tile or vinyl may be less affected but can hide issues like subfloor damage. Act quickly to minimize permanent damage.
2. Dry correctly for mold prevention.
Proper drying is critical. Air drying or mopping isn’t enough — use fans or dehumidifiers to remove all moisture. Mold is a major concern, especially for porous materials like carpet and wood. Check for mold early and address it immediately.
3. Repair or replace.
Not all floors can be salvaged. Tile or vinyl might be repairable, but wood, laminate and carpet often need replacing. Contact your insurance provider to review coverage for water damage.
4. Ensure subfloor quality.
Even if the top layer appears fine, the subfloor could be compromised. Ensure it’s thoroughly dried and inspected for mold or structural damage before installing new flooring.
5. Consider water-resistant flooring.
When replacing flooring, consider water-resistant materials such as vinyl planks, ceramic tile or sealed concrete. Adding moisture barriers can help protect against future damage.
