Strengthening our Youth
Open Doors Asheville works to eliminate gaps in education and resources for students in Western North Carolina.
OpenDoors Asheville is transforming lives by eliminating opportunity and achievement gaps for students through education, mentorship, and access to life-changing opportunities. Every day, we witness the impact of this work firsthand. One of our first students who joined OpenDoors as a first grader recently graduated from Western Carolina University with her Master’s in Social Work. As the youngest of nine siblings, her journey could have looked very different without the consistent support, guidance, and opportunities OpenDoors provided along the way. Today, she is one of 25 OpenDoors students currently attending college, and we could not be prouder.
OpenDoors Asheville serves approximately 125 students and families each year, from kindergarten through college completion. Our comprehensive, research-based model provides one-on-one tutoring, psychoeducational assessments, afterschool and summer enrichment, college readiness programming, internships, and ongoing “To & Through” college support. We also remove barriers that often prevent students from succeeding by assisting with transportation, tuition, FAFSA applications, camp registrations, and other critical needs.
The results speak for themselves. Over the past six years, 100 percent of OpenDoors students have graduated high school, and 88 percent have enrolled in postsecondary education as first-generation college students. These outcomes are possible because of a caring community that believes every child deserves the chance to thrive.
Right now, generous donors are matching the first $25,000 in gifts, doubling the impact of every donation. We also urgently need 30 more tutors and support for our summer camp Amazon registry to ensure students have the supplies they need for a successful summer.
Join us in changing lives and building a stronger community.
