Biltmore Park Residents Bess and Craig Carter Plus Our Wellness Partners Weigh In & Share Their Best Advice

The Hearing Guy: Owner Brent Steele, Bryce Skaggs, Hugo De La Torre, Leslie Steele and Athena Myers

Bess Carter

What does wellness mean to you?
Wellness is the everyday process of making intentional choices and sticking to daily habits to live a healthier lifestyle and feel good. My mom is a nurse, so staying on top of preventive care was always just a normal part of our lives growing up. We regularly went to the doctor and dentist, and that mindset has stayed with me into adulthood. Now that I’m a mom myself, I want to continue that same level of care for myself and my family so we can do our best to stay healthy.

A healthy habit that’s made the biggest difference.
I’m grateful that being an athlete my whole life instilled in me the habit of being active every day, and it’s something I’ve continued because I truly enjoy it. I try to exercise five or six days a week for at least 30 minutes a day. I need to do something active, even if it’s just a walk, not only for my physical health but also for my mental health.

Advice you’d give to someone who puts off medical appointments.
I worked for many years in corporate health and wellness at a hospital system in Charlotte, and I saw firsthand how much preventive care can make a real difference. Screenings can help identify conditions early, while other preventive measures can reduce the risk of serious diseases. Regular, evidence-based screenings and checkups can detect problems when they may be easier to treat or manage and may help prevent future complications.

What does wellness mean to you?
Wellness means being healthy and balanced physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. It means feeling good and being able to enjoy the active things I love while also having the energy and perspective to be present for my family.

What motivates you to stay on top of preventive care?
I've always been motivated to remain physically fit in order to continue enjoying outdoor activities and adventures, but my three young daughters have become my biggest motivation to stay healthy. I want to stay healthy and active for them for many years to come.

What is one healthy habit you’ve developed that has made the biggest difference?
Making physical activity something I genuinely enjoy. If I’m biking, running, hiking or even just walking around the neighborhood with my girls, it doesn’t feel like exercise just for the sake of exercise. Doing something outdoors boosts my mental and emotional health just as much as my physical health.

What advice would you give someone who tends to put off doctor or dentist appointments?
Life is busy and it’s easy to put off something that doesn’t feel urgent, but preventative care is important because it can identify small issues before they become bigger ones!

The Hearing Guy

1. Give us one expert piece of advice for preventive care.
Don’t wait until hearing loss is affecting your quality of life. A routine hearing test, especially for those over 50, gives you a baseline, helps identify changes early and allows us to preserve your brain’s ability to understand words.

2. What is the biggest misconception you hear from patients or clients?
We often hear, “I’ve heard all I want to hear,” or “Hearing aids will make me look old.”
Hearing isn’t about what you want to hear — it’s about staying connected to the people you love. Most hearing aids today are incredibly discreet, and many even look like what younger generations are wearing for Bluetooth calls. Plus, nothing ages you more than saying “what?” or “huh?” all the time.

3. What’s new or exciting about your business this year?
We are growing, with an additional provider and a soon-to-be third location.
As far as products go, hearing aids now have Auracast capability built in. Auracast is a new form of Bluetooth audio that allows your hearing aids to stream sound directly into your ears. This will be a game changer for watching TV, movies or a play at your local theater.

4. Tell us a fun fact about your business or team.
Both of our providers have the initials B.S., but don’t worry: they are both straightforward and honest people!

Integrative Family Medicine of Asheville

1. Give us one expert piece of advice for preventive care.
Don’t wait for something to feel wrong before you talk to your doctor. The biggest wins in preventive care come from catching small shifts in blood pressure, blood sugar, weight and mood years before they become a diagnosis.

That only works if you actually have enough time with your provider to notice the trend, not just check a box. It’s one of the biggest reasons we built our practice the way we did.

2. What is the biggest misconception you hear from patients or clients?
That health insurance and health care are the same thing.

We hear it constantly: someone has great insurance but still can’t get a same-week appointment, or spends more time on hold than in an exam room.
Insurance determines how a bill gets paid. It doesn’t determine how much time your doctor spends with you or whether you can text them a question on a Tuesday. Those are two different problems, and we built our model to solve the second one.

3. What’s new or exciting about your business this year?
We’ve been expanding our work with local employers, helping small businesses offer their teams direct access to primary care as an actual benefit, not just another line item buried in a health plan.

We’re also continuing to grow our free community education series, from health talks to seasonal outdoor programs, because we think good information should be available whether or not you’re a patient here.

4. Tell us a fun fact about your business or team.
We were Asheville’s first direct primary care practice, opening in 2011, long before “DPC” was a term most people recognized.

A few of our original patients are still with us today, which says a lot about the kind of relationships we set out to build in the first place.

Hands On Wellness

1. Give us one expert piece of advice for preventive care.
Don’t wait until something hurts to take care of your body.

Preventive care is about supporting your nervous system, mobility and overall resilience before symptoms become problems. Small, consistent choices; regular chiropractic care; movement; quality sleep; proper nutrition; stress management; and addressing the physical, chemical and emotional stressors in your life can make a significant difference in how you feel and function long term.

2. What is the biggest misconception you hear from patients or clients?
One of the biggest misconceptions is that chiropractic care is only for back or neck pain.

Our focus goes far beyond pain relief. We look at how the spine and nervous system are functioning and how that can influence the body as a whole.

3. What’s new or exciting about your business this year?
We’re excited to bring the Hands On Wellness approach to Asheville with an expanded focus on whole-person wellness, including chiropractic care, bioenergetic assessments, PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic frequency) therapy, laser therapy, peptides and personalized wellness strategies.

We’re also excited to offer Neuro Change Solutions courses with Dr. Miriam, teaching practical tools for understanding how our thoughts, emotions and behaviors shape our brains and influence the results we create.

4. Tell us a fun fact about your business or team.
We believe true wellness involves more than the physical body. We look at the physical, chemical and emotional aspects of health, and we love helping people connect the dots between how they think, how they live and how they feel.

Great Smiles

1. Give us one expert piece of advice for preventive care.
Start dental visits by age 1.

Many parents wait until a child has all their teeth or is starting school, but early visits let us catch small issues before they become bigger problems and help kids build comfort with the dentist from the start.

2. What is the biggest misconception you hear from patients or clients?
That baby teeth don’t matter because they eventually fall out.

Baby teeth hold space for adult teeth and play a big role in speech, eating and overall oral development. Cavities or other issues in baby teeth absolutely deserve attention.

3. What’s new or exciting about your business this year?
We are continuing to grow our community partnerships and events across all five of our locations in Asheville, Reynolds Mountain, Marion, Waynesville and Sylva.

4. Tell us a fun fact about your business or team.
We’re a family-owned, doctor-led practice, and our team loves getting out into the community. From back-to-school events to sponsoring local youth sports, we’re as much a part of these towns as the families we treat.

Core Human Health

1. Give us one expert piece of advice for preventive care.
Build wellness practices into your everyday life before you feel like you “need” them.
Consistency matters more than chasing the latest trend. Movement, quality sleep, recovery, stress management and intentional practices such as sauna, cold exposure or red-light therapy can become part of a sustainable wellness routine when they fit your lifestyle and goals.

2. What is the biggest misconception you hear from patients or clients?
That there is one “best” wellness product for everyone.

The best sauna, cold plunge or recovery tool is the one that fits your goals, space, budget and lifestyle — and that you’ll actually use consistently.

More expensive or more complicated doesn’t automatically mean better for you. Every BODY is different.

3. What’s new or exciting about your business this year?
We at Core Human Health have expanded our collection of premium home wellness equipment and our personalized consultation service.

We now help clients compare and design complete home wellness spaces featuring traditional, infrared and hybrid saunas; cold therapy; red-light therapy; and other recovery-focused technologies.

4. Tell us a fun fact about your business or team.
I’m a bit of a wellness equipment nerd! I genuinely enjoy diving into the details of heaters, infrared technology, cold therapy and all the little differences most people never knew existed.

Asheville Beauty Co.

1. Give us one expert piece of advice for preventive care.
One of our favorite forms of preventive care is tox.

When used strategically, the Tox Technique can help prevent repetitive muscle movement from creating deeper, more established lines over time. We focus on subtle, natural-looking results that preserve your expression while helping you maintain a refreshed appearance.

2. What is the biggest misconception you hear from patients or clients?
Many people worry that aesthetic treatments will drastically change the way they look.
With these treatments, which are thoughtfully and properly performed, the goal isn’t to change your appearance — it’s to enhance the natural beauty you already have while keeping your results balanced and natural.

3. What’s new or exciting about your business this year?
We’ve continued to expand our offerings beyond injectables, adding advanced laser treatments, customized facials and body-tightening modalities so we can provide even more comprehensive aesthetic care — all under one roof.

4. Tell us a fun fact about your business or team.
Asheville Beauty Co. is proudly managed and operated by an all-female team! We’re passionate about creating a supportive, welcoming environment where our clients feel comfortable, heard and cared for.

Arden Family Dental

1. Give us one expert piece of advice for preventive care.
Stick to the basics consistently: brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily and don’t skip your six-month cleanings.

Most serious problems — cavities, gum disease and tooth loss — start small and are easiest to treat when caught early. Regular visits let us spot trouble before it ever hurts.

2. What is the biggest misconception you hear from patients or clients?
“If my teeth don’t hurt, I don’t need to see a dentist.”

Pain is often one of the last symptoms to appear. Cavities, gum disease and cracked teeth can develop silently. By the time it hurts, treatment is usually more involved.

Regular checkups are about prevention, not just fixing problems.

3. What’s new or exciting about your business this year?
This year we welcomed a new dentist, Dr. Capener, and several new hygienists.

We also expanded our hours to five days per week and hope to offer same-day crowns by the end of the year, making visits faster and more comfortable for our patients.

4. Tell us a fun fact about your business or team.
Although the office opened in 2025, our team is committed to serving this community, and several of us grew up right here. Chances are we know your kids’ school or coach their team. For us, this really is our neighborhood.

“Choose consistency over perfection. One of the most powerful things you can do for your health doesn’t happen in the gym; it happens in the small choices you make every day. You don’t have to have the perfect workout, eat the perfect meal or have the perfect week to make progress. Every healthy choice you make builds momentum. Drink the water. Take the walk. Go to Burn Boot Camp. Go to bed a little earlier. Choose the protein. Celebrate the small wins. Remember, your health isn’t built by what you do once in a while; it’s built by what you do consistently. Give yourself grace, keep showing up and trust the process. Small habits lead to big results over time.” — Carrie Robitzer, Owner

“Want to make everyday activities easier? Try adding lunges to your routine. Because they train one leg at a time, lunges challenge your strength, balance and coordination, skills you use every time you climb a step, walk on uneven ground or enjoy a day on the trails. At Alloy Personal Training, we focus on functional strength training to help you build real-world strength for everyday life.” — Tracy Adolf, Owner

“As we enter the holiday season, remember that showing up for yourself will allow you to show up more powerfully for the others in your life. At barre3, our goal is for you to leave the studio feeling stronger and more energized — not depleted. It’s the perfect complement to the holiday craziness!” — Hannah Walters, Owner and Biltmore Park neighbor

Invigorate Asheville has treatments for pain management, weight loss, depression, hormone therapy and to regenerate skin. “For the skin, we have more natural and less invasive treatments, giving a more natural look. One of those options is Tixel, which is heat rejuvenation for the face.” — Dr. Linda Dula, owner and a longtime Biltmore Park neighbor
