Future of Football

Robert Waters is the board president of Flower Mound Youth Football Academy (FMYFAcademy) — a nonprofit 501(c)(3), 100% volunteer-ran organization — and he shared his business’s vision and goal to better the youth through sport.

I am a veteran football coach with 27 years of experience, having served three states and 12 high schools, including the last twelve years at Marcus and Flower Mound High Schools. After spending so much time on the field with countless kids and their families, I decided to dedicate more time to my own children, their friends, and their families. This transition opened a new world of navigating youth sports and connecting with like-minded parents who shared our frustration with the trophy-chasing culture.

Despite my extensive experience in the industry, I was surprised to find myself at a loss when it came time for my son to start playing tackle football. About six months ago, a few dads and I met to discuss our options, and we decided to create our own platform. This led to the birth of the Flower Mound Youth Football Academy (FMYFAcademy), a program designed to foster a better environment for youth sports in our community.

Dedication & Services
At FMYFA, while our mission is for the youth zoned in Flower Mound, we have opened our doors to surrounding communities who share our values. The vision is to provide a standalone Academy that would play surrounding communities as we help build out the same concept.

How we distinguish ourselves from other youth football programs is through our numerous approaches:

1.     Community-Centric Approach: FMYFAcademy is designed to serve the local community, with all games played within our community. This focus on community fosters a sense of belonging and support among players, parents, and coaches. With our goal of playing all games within our community, we are having to rent game fields in surrounding communities due to costs.

2.     Comprehensive Coach Training: Our coaches are trained in USA Football's “Heads Up Tackling” and ATAVUS's “Heads Out of Tackling” techniques. Additionally, each team has a coach certified in First Aid and CPR, ensuring player safety and well-being.

3.     Partnerships with High School Programs: We collaborate with the coaching staff at Flower Mound and Marcus High Schools to provide coaching clinics and enhance our practice strategies. This partnership ensures that our players receive high-quality instruction from experienced professionals.

4.     Structured and Inclusive Draft Process: Our draft process, based on thorough evaluations during spring football, summer camps, and pre-season workouts, ensures balanced teams. Each team can protect up to six players by maintaining a core group that facilitates continuity with game-day processes. This method ensures fair and competitive play, fostering player development and a cohesive team environment.

5.     Focus on Player Development: We emphasize individual and group skill development through grade-level practices and team practices. Our practices are intentionally designed by experienced coaches to build fundamental football skills.

6.     Transparency and Affordability: We strive to keep costs under $600 and provide a detailed breakdown of individual and team expenses. Our registration fee includes a game jersey, and we offer an online store for additional equipment purchases, ensuring affordability for families.

7.     Inclusive Participation: Our goal is to provide vertical alignment within our community, allowing kids zoned for Marcus High School and Flower Mound High School to play together from kindergarten to sixth grade. We aim to create a strong sense of community and continuity by fostering relationships among future Marauders and Jaguars. Additionally, we welcome kids from surrounding communities to participate. Our intention is to share our model with these communities, helping them develop similar programs where their local high schools can be represented. This approach allows our teams to compete with neighboring areas that have embraced the same community-focused philosophy. We have also restructured the offerings.  We are now providing tackle football for second through sixth grade in the fall, and second through eighth grade 7on7 in the spring.

8.     Parental Involvement and Support: We actively involve parents through transparent communication, opportunities to coach, and community events. This ensures a supportive environment for both players and their families.

These unique aspects create a nurturing, safe, and development-focused environment that distinguishes FMYFAcademy from other youth football programs. They offer a turnkey operation from kindergarten to eighth grade, ensuring that our kids are well-prepared to compete at a high level when they transition to their local high schools.

Next Big Thing in Football
Safety is the biggest change in our industry. It has never been safer to play the game of football. There is no better time to learn the proper techniques of the game than when players are young, as the size and speed differences between players are minimal. Equipment, specifically helmets, now has a rating system developed by Virginia Tech, which is backed by over 15 years of research. Additionally, recent tackling techniques, such as ATAVUS “heads out of tackling,” are being taught from the NFL down to high schools to ensure that players are not leading with their heads.
