For Richard Baker, barbecue has never been just about the food. It's about sharing experiences, stories, and trays of meat around whatever your version of the family table happens to be.
Richard's barbecue journey began in 1996 when he bought his first backyard offset smoker. What started as a hobby quickly became a passion as he spent years perfecting the craft of smoking meat. Over time, that passion grew into a serious pursuit of authentic Central Texas-style barbecue.
After selling his Dallas/Fort Worth-based healthcare company in 2022 and later recovering from a heart attack and quadruple bypass surgery, Richard and his wife, Stefanie, relocated to Hoover to be closer to family. Today, they enjoy spending time with their children and grandchildren.
Not long after moving to Blackridge, curious neighbors began asking about the massive smoker parked in his driveway. Richard's response was simple: invite them over and let the barbecue do the talking.
He invited their new Hoover neighbors over, and it seems the Alabamians are now hooked on Central TEXAS Style Craft Barbecue.
What started as feeding neighbors soon grew into church events, wedding receptions, driveway pop-ups, and catering throughout the community. Richard's cooks regularly sell out, with neighbors eagerly waiting to hear when the next one will be announced.
The star of the show is his melt-in-your-mouth brisket, smoked low and slow over post oak wood and seasoned simply to let the quality of the beef shine. It's the same brisket that has earned Baker Pit Barbecue a loyal following throughout Hoover.
And while great barbecue doesn't need sauce, Richard has created his own Original Barbecue Sauce that is great on everything. You can find his sauce at your local Hoover Steaks & Wines.
This month, Richard is sharing the brisket rub that helps make Baker Pit Barbecue a neighborhood favorite. As Richard likes to say, you don't have to go to Texas to get Central TEXAS Style barbecue. Welcome to TEXAS Alabama.
