From the Emergency Room to the Flight Surgery

In this Veteran Spotlight, we get to know Andrew Seymore, a Major in the South Carolina Army National Guard. He shares with us his service and his family in this exclusive article.

“The military is a true melting pot that embodies the American dream, and I am extremely lucky to have been given the opportunity to serve.”

Andrew Seymore lives in Buena Vista with his wife, Rachel Wolfe, and their two kids, Harry (8) and Noah (5). They moved to the neighborhood a few years ago, buying their home from a family friend. Their favorite part of the neighborhood is how no home looks the same, and each has its own personality and history.

“We love the neighborhood's walkability, and like that, we can go on family walks as often as possible,” Andrew shares. “Both children attend an amazing elementary school that we can walk to, which makes the neighborhood and our home even better.”

Harry and Noah both attend Whitaker Elementary School. For activities, Harry loves math and art, while Noah is very active in recycling. For work both Andrew and Rachel work at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist — Rachel is a rheumatologist, and Andrew is currently an emergency room physician.

In the military he is in his 14th year of service in the U.S. Army as a flight surgeon with the 59th Aviation Troop Command. His most recent deployment was in 2023 to Kosovo with the 251st MCAS under the command of the 56th IBCT out of Texas. Andrew feels very lucky that his career in medicine has given him the opportunity to serve.

“On my recent deployment, I got to work alongside numerous other countries, including England, Germany, Austria, Greece, Romania, Switzerland and multiple other NATO countries.  I was able to liaise with multiple other medical providers, which was a great learning experience. … These experiences have broadened my military and medical knowledge and also helped me develop numerous relationships.”

Andrew’s favorite part of the military is that no matter one’s background, race, religion, and more, they come together under a blank slate to make their careers successful based on hard work and dedication. His father was also in the military and had an extremely difficult upbringing, but it gave him the opportunity to better his life and, in turn, send both of his sons (Andrew and his brother) to college.

Rachel has felt the love of the community gather around her through Andrew’s most recent deployment. His most recent leave was the toughest they’ve been through, but centering “family” around each thing they do has made all the difference. To bond as a family, they love to head to the zoo, take a walk to Buie’s, or go to sporting events. Anything together makes them happy! Trips have especially been a fun way to bond. Andrew and Rachel rediscovered their love of travel after the pandemic and have been all over (Costa Rica has been their favorite trip so far!).

They love to host friends and neighbors in their home. They bring out their bouncy houses (yes, plural!), and all the kids have a blast. They love making mundane days fun because the Seymore family knows that embracing each and every day is so important.

Family Buena Vista History
Rachel’s father grew up in Buena Vista. They love hearing him discuss changes and show them around. They recently walked past his old home and got to meet the current owners … Who bought it from Rachel’s grandmother almost 40-plus years ago!

Family Fun Facts
When it comes to sports, Andrew loves Clemson and Rachel supports Duke (they’re happy their sports do not typically overlap!). Every member of the family are Wake Forest fans — particularly fans of their soccer team.
