The Tale of Cooper & Skyler
How Two Rescued Pups Found Family, Friendship, and Endless Adventures
The Buena Vista neighborhood is home to many cherished pets, but few share a bond as strong as Cooper and Skyler. Their journey from separate beginnings to inseparable best friends is a heartwarming testament to the special connection between humans and their furry companions.
For nearly three years, Liz, Derek, Cooper, and Skyler have embraced everything the neighborhood offers—especially the scenic walking paths perfect for their energetic pups. Whether exploring the historic grounds of Reynolda or strolling through Buena Vista, Cooper and Skyler are always up for an adventure.
During the pandemic, Cooper, a five-year-old “Super Mutt,” was adopted by Derek as an eight-week-old puppy from AARF. Skyler, a two-year-old Lab, Bulldog, and Sheepdog/Shepherd mix, was rescued off the streets in Charlotte by Billie’s Buddies. After three failed adoptions, fate intervened when Derek’s sister, a foster volunteer, introduced them to Skyler. At an adoption event, Skyler kept gravitating toward Liz, ignoring the family interested in her. When she later met Cooper, the two bonded instantly, confirming she had found her forever home.
Names often hold special meaning, but for Cooper and Skyler, they were simply the right fit. Cooper was originally named Han Solo, but Derek felt “Coop” suited him better. Skyler’s rescue name, Ash, didn’t stick, so after watching a Breaking Bad, her family chose Skyler because they loved the name despite not caring for the show’s character. Now, she responds to affectionate nicknames like Sky, Baby Seal, and Squirrel.
Both dogs have distinct personalities. Cooper’s mismatched ears—one standing up, the other flopping down—add to his charm, and he loves burrowing under blankets at night. Skyler, a natural herder, enjoys cuddling and showing off her beautiful merle coat and fluffy “Grinch” paws.
One of the family’s most cherished memories is the day they brought Skyler home. Unsure of how the dogs would interact, they introduced them to each other at a dog park. To Derek and Liz’s delight, Cooper and Skyler played as if they had known each other forever. That moment sealed the deal—Skyler was meant to be part of their family.
Today, the duo enjoys neighborhood walks and trips to Reynolda. Skyler loves grooming days at WoofGang, while both eagerly anticipate treats from Best 4K9 and Pup Cups from Starbucks. Their next dream adventure? A trip to the beach, where they can run freely in the sand and surf.
Cooper and Skyler’s journey from rescue to family is a testament to the joy, love, and companionship that pets bring into our lives every day.
