Roxie Mendez, adorable and affectionate Shih Tzu

Window Gazing watching for wildlife

Jason and Jane Mendez moved to North Texas from Huntington Beach, CA in 2016. A job opportunity for Jane brought them to the great state of Texas. They rented an apartment across the lake to give them time to explore the neighborhoods all over the Metroplex and Ray Hubbard areas. They looked at numerous homes in the Rockwall area. Four years later they found their house in Buffalo Creek that checked of all of the boxes. The Mendezes became Buffalo Creek residents on Serenity Lane in December 2020.

The Mendezes’ fur-baby Buck, a YorkiePoo, moved with them to Texas and sadly crossed the rainbow bridge in March 2025 at the age of 15. Longtime dog lovers, Jane and Jason soon welcomed a new pup when a friend of Jason’s had an unexpected litter of Shih Tzu puppies. Born last July, Roxie was brought home by Jason and Jane at eight weeks old. The couple chose her name from photos before meeting her, and at eight months old, Roxie already shows the big personality, playful energy, and loving nature typical of her breed.

Jane lovingly describes Roxie as “a handful.” Still a puppy, Roxie is in her chewing stage and always seems to find something to gnaw on.  She loves her toys and they are often scattered throughout the house. She happily waits each afternoon for Jason to return home so they can go on their daily walk, and when he’s home, Roxie is rarely far from his side—whether resting at his feet or following him like an escort from room to room. She rarely barks, except when greeting visitors at the door or watching workmen in the yard in her role as home protector.

Jason sectioned off a private area in the backyard through the doggie door, keeping Roxie safely away from the pool and wildlife. She loves to run and uses the space for her zoomies, only entering the pool area when Jane and Jason are with her—and even then, she shows no interest in getting in. Roxie is still learning basic commands but knows her name, comes when called, and definitely understands when she’s being scolded. She runs on an internal clock for early morning wake-ups (5:00 a.m.) and dinnertime. Jane and Jason are careful to feed her only dog food, though Jason occasionally can’t resist sharing a bite. Roxie also enjoys watching rabbits, squirrels, birds, and passing neighbors from the window, and in January, she happily experienced her first snowfall.

After 15 years with Buck, the Mendezes missed the pitter-patter of puppy paws. They didn’t have to wait long to have another perfect pup in their lives. Roxie, with her beautiful and fluffy white coat and dark puppy eyes, is living her best life, happy in her forever home with Jane and Jason on Serenity Lane.
