James Novey began his career in sales with Eckrich Meat Co. in the mid-1970s, where he helped opened the company’s first Texas location. In 1982, after building his own fence with a neighbor’s help, he began earning extra income by constructing fences part-time. Driven by an entrepreneurial spirit, and despite being offered several management positions, James left Eckrich in January 1983 to launch J-N Fence Company with two crews and a vision of owning his own business. Wood and chain link fences were the standard offerings at the time, with wrought iron fencing eventually becoming a popular option.
