Buffalo Creek resident Monte Allred has lived in Buffalo Creek for more than 25 years. He and his wife Cornelia moved here when he retired after a 40 year career with AT&T.  A U.S. Army veteran, Monte spent 6 years in the service, working with the German-American aerospace engineer Wernher von Braun and the Army’s rocket development team at Redstone Arsenal. Their work resulted in the Redstone rocket, used for the first live nuclear ballistic missile tests conducted by the U.S.  

 

Eight years ago, while at a Buffalo Creek garage sale, the Allreds learned that one of their BC neighbors had a 3-puppy litter of Maltese pups and the daughter was given the job to finding them a good home. It was meant to be—the puppies were born on January 15—Monte’s birthday!  Cornelia and Monte brought Scooter home as a companion to Toby, their older Maltese who Cornelia and Monte rescued from a Royse City facility. The couple nursed Toby back to health—Toby was in bad health, severely malnourished and just hours from being euthanized. Scooter had that puppy excitement when meeting Toby, running around in circles with the “zoomies” so fast that Toby couldn’t keep up! Thus his name—Scooter. Toby and Scooter were companions for a year until Toby crossed the rainbow bridge. Unsure of Toby’s exact age, the Allreds were thankful that they were able to give Toby a happy and loving life for 7 years in his forever home.

 

Sadly, Cornelia, Monte’s wife of 64 years, passed away in November 2022.  Cornelia and Scooter had a special bond. She loved playing with her “baby” and his toys that she kept in a beautiful wooden toy box. To this day, if Monte plays a recording of Cornelia’s voice, Scooter will immediately start looking for her throughout the house.  

 

Now Monte’s constant companion, the two walk the neighborhood twice a day, Scooter’s favorite activity.  Monte spoils him by brushing him every morning and when Monte asks him to roll on his back, Scooter will lay still for his eye-cleaning, and or course, a tummy rub! Scooter enjoys car rides and was always excited to join Monte on the Meals on Wheels deliveries Monte made for years. Scooter is loved by all his neighbors on Kathryn Lane, including the fur-babies who he gets along with, big or small!  He loves being outside, staying at Monte’s side when he’s doing yard work but also chasing squirrels and birds, hoping to catch one someday.   Scooter is not food driven but does like his doggie chicken strips that Monte gives him as a treat.  

 

Monte is one of our longest Buffalo Creek residents and neighbors, helped create our Board of Directors, and has given years of service as a member of the HOA. Monte describes Scooter as smart, obedient and very loving. Now 8 years old, Scooter provides Monte with lots of love, affection and constant companionship. On January 15, 2026, Monte will turn 90 and Scooter will turn 9 – a birthday shared by these two best buddies, friends and companions, living in their forever home right here in Buffalo Creek.
