Piper and Maggi Curley – Black Labs
Sister Pups Maggie and Piper
We met the Curley family last March when Jenna, Evan, and five-year-old Porter were featured in the magazine’s Meet Your Neighbors spotlight. At the time I was introduced to their fur-babies and knew I wanted to learn more about them and share their story with fellow pet lovers in the neighborhood.
Sadly, Bubba, the family’s 18½-year-old Yorkie mix, crossed the rainbow bridge this past January. Though just 12 pounds, he was the unquestioned “boss” of Black Labs Piper and Maggi. Jenna’s constant shadow, Bubba loved car rides perched on the center console so he could easily see out the windows, and faithfully patrolled the fence each night like a guard dog. He lived a long, happy life and is surely celebrating in doggie heaven.
Piper is a ten-year-old Black Lab/Great Dane mix who was rescued during Texas flooding after being found abandoned with her mother and littermates. Jenna agreed to foster her for one weekend, but she and Evan quickly decided to give Piper her forever home with Bubba and Jessie, Evan’s red healer. A true fighter, Piper survived both the floods and a severe case of kennel cough at four months old that required multiple rounds of IVs and antibiotics. Described as wise, calm, sweet and a momma’s girl, today Piper is a strong 70-pound dog with lean lines and long Great Dane legs.
Maggi was adopted almost six years ago when the Black Lab of friends of Evan and Jenna’s had an accidental litter. At the time, Jessie was aging and Evan and Jenna wanted a transition pup for Piper. Jessie crossed the rainbow bridge just a few months after bringing Maggi home.
At six, Maggi still has endless puppy energy, earning a reputation from Jenna as perpetually naughty—despite several sessions of professional training. Ironically, she was the calmest of her litter when Evan and Jenna chose her. An English Black Lab with a broad and sturdy 100-pound frame, Maggi is known for her irresistible “puppy dog eyes.” She prefers people over other dogs, often nuzzling neighbors and guests for attention, a true “people’s pup”. Maggi is Porter’s favorite since the two have grown up together. Maggi is very patient and sweet with Porter (and all kids), even allowing Porter to dress her up in Princess gowns and tiaras! At meal time, you will find Maggi under Porter’s chair, patiently waiting for fallen crumbs from Porter’s plate.
Piper and Maggi have distinct personalities but play well together. Piper loves chasing squirrels, rabbits, birds, and a visiting raccoon, while Maggi prefers people and ignores the backyard wildlife. Piper still avoids pools and bodies of water—something Jenna links to her early flood experience—whereas Maggi happily swims and even tries to squeeze into Porter’s wading pool on hot days. Despite being leaner and lighter, Piper often beats 100-pound Maggi at tug-of-war. Both are sweet and affectionate, showcasing why Labradors are often chosen as a favorite family pet.
With the loss of the family’s beloved Bubba, Piper and Maggi have helped fill the home with joy, laughter, and love. These accidental sister pups are now living their best life with the Curley family in their forever home in Buffalo Creek.
