Elizabeth and John with their boys Bennett and Grey

Elizabeth and John Wilson were new to the neighborhood when we met them in July 2016, having lived on Bridle Path Court for less than a year. Their son, Bennett, was just 11 weeks old when the family was photographed for the July 2016 cover.

It seems like just yesterday, but nearly 10 years have passed. Bennett is now 10, and his younger brother, Grey, turns 8 in August. Best friends, the brothers love sports and enjoy attending school and church at Lakepointe with their parents. Before catching up with the family today, let’s take a quick trip down memory lane and reacquaint ourselves with John and Elizabeth.

Self-proclaimed foodies, the couple met in 2014 at an event at the Farmers Market in Dallas. Introduced at the time by mutual friends, they discovered they had crossed paths many times but somehow never met. Growing up in DeSoto, John earned his cosmetology license and went on to create his own successful salon, the Matrix Salon, in Uptown Dallas. After 11 years, John changed careers to insurance. Today John is the owner and operator of Brightshield Insurance, providing commercial, home, auto, life, property and casualty insurance. Elizabeth, born and raised in Missouri, has spent her 27 year career in medical sales, where today she is responsible for the East Texas region with global leader Welch Allyn/Baxter International.

Bennett will enter fifth grade this fall. Science is his favorite subject, and he enjoys building things and figuring out how they work. John and Elizabeth describe him as smart and methodical. While he has played flag football, soccer, and basketball, golf is currently his favorite sport, and he participates in the PGA Jr. League at Buffalo Creek Golf Course. Bennett also enjoys chess, video games, and movies with plenty of suspense and shock value.

Grey, whom his parents describe as athletic and funny, will enter second grade this fall. While math is his favorite subject, he especially enjoys the social side of school. This year, he received the Chick-fil-A Character Award, an honor given to one student in each class for exhibiting outstanding character and leadership on a daily basis. Like his brother, Grey loves sports. He played basketball this spring and will begin tackle football with the Heath Hawks this fall. During the summer, Grey and Bennett stay busy with friends, attending camps, riding bikes and electric scooters around the neighborhood, and spending plenty of time at the pool.

As an entrepreneur and owner of Brightshield Insurance, John stays busy with operations, growth, staff, and customer service, guided by his priorities of God, family, and business. He recently joined a men’s Bible study at Lakepointe Church, where the family have been members for years. He plays golf whenever possible, enjoying it now with Bennett on the course alongside him, and maintains a daily gym routine. Cooking is another passion, with smokers, grills, and a pizza oven as part of his outdoor kitchen—specializing in Texas BBQ and weekly Friday family pizza nights.

Elizabeth is a busy working mom of two boys who also serves on the Board and is current President of Aspasians in Rockwall, where the organization raised $95,000 this year for RISD scholarships. She enjoys working out and has recently developed a passion for Pilates. Elizabeth does not consider herself a golfer but will occasionally join the family on golf outings. At home, she is the primary caregiver for their French bulldogs, Max and Willow, who are cherished by the entire family.

The Wilsons love to travel, including a recent spring break trip to Disney World, an upcoming summer trip to the Bahamas, and regular road trips to Missouri to visit Elizabeth’s family two to three times a year. They also enjoy dining out locally in Rockwall, with Standard Service a favorite for family date nights and Zanata’s as John and Elizabeth’s choice for a special date night.

The Wilson family are no longer the “newcomers” described in the July 2016 article. Ten years later, they are long-time Buffalo Creek residents, building lasting memories with their growing family. We wish them many more years of happiness, family fun, and shared moments right here in Buffalo Creek.
