A Life Rooted in Community and Discovery: The Cantu Family’s Carlton Woods Story

Fourteen years ago, the Cantu family took a trip to visit friends living in The Woodlands and immediately fell in love. The towering trees, peaceful homes, and strong sense of family life deeply resonated with them. Most of all, Claudia Cantu recalls being moved by how kind and welcoming the people were. That visit inspired a decision to adopt a lifestyle focused on community, nature, and meaningful connection.

They found everything they were looking for in Carlton Woods.

At the time, the Fazio neighborhood was still in its early stages. There were empty lots, unfinished roads, and plenty of room to grow. Over the years, the Cantu family watched the area transform into a thriving, connected community.

“The best part is that among neighbors, we look out for one another and help each other when needed.” — Claudia Cantu

That sense of support was evident from the beginning. Claudia remembers how, shortly after moving in, her neighbor Peggy invited her to a luncheon at the clubhouse. She was nervous at first, not knowing anyone yet, but the event turned out to be a warm and welcoming experience that opened the door to lasting friendships.

Over time, the Cantus became part of beloved neighborhood traditions. Halloween, in particular, holds a special place in their hearts. Their youngest son, who was a child when they moved in, looked forward to dressing up and celebrating with other families. Today, Claudia enjoys watching a new generation of children carry on that tradition.

Outside of Carlton Woods, travel has always been an essential part of the Cantu family’s life. For Claudia, it’s not just about sightseeing—it’s about education, growth, and connection. When they enrolled their youngest son in school, they were drawn to the diversity of the student body. He made lifelong friends from all over the world, and those relationships continue to this day.

Each trip they take is carefully planned. From researching local customs and cuisine to studying the history and culture of each destination, they approach travel with curiosity and respect. Of all their adventures, their journey to Egypt stands out as especially meaningful.

“It was a trip that left me with a lot of learning in every sense.” — Claudia Cantu

The experience included camel rides, boat tours, and visits to ancient ruins. But one moment stands above the rest: watching the sunrise over Luxor from a hot air balloon.

“To be able to see the sunrise from the sky—in that moment, you make a connection that I don’t have words to describe, as if time stopped and you’re looking at a painting with a beautiful landscape and hot air balloons spinning around you. It was something magical for me.” — Claudia Cantu

Of course, not every trip goes as planned. Claudia recalls one instance when her luggage didn’t arrive before a cruise departure. Even then, she chose to embrace the unexpected and focus on the experience. That mindset—one of flexibility, gratitude, and curiosity—reflects how the Cantus live both at home and abroad.

Now that their sons are older—the eldest working internationally and the youngest recently graduated from university in New York—family trips are less frequent but even more cherished.

“When we have the opportunity to travel as a family, those are very special moments for us.” — Claudia Cantu

Recently, Claudia completed a diploma in Emotional Intelligence and Positive Psychology. It reaffirmed her belief that experiences, especially those we plan and dream about, are vital for personal growth and emotional well-being.

At the heart of it all is her simple yet powerful philosophy on travel and life:

“If you’re going to travel, do it with your soul—because when you experience a trip that way, you allow yourself to be touched by every moment, and those are memories you’ll always carry in your heart.”
