The Bridge Gallery Art Reveal: Mara Van Fleet

My impression of our town is that the people who live here have a deep love for the local flora and fauna, which includes native plants, insects, and four-legged family members. My mural highlights some of the beautiful plants that bloom each year, attracting butterflies to grace our parks, streets, and homes. Many of us often interact with the environment through our pets - whether we're walking dogs at Gedney Park or sitting inside admiring nature with our cats, birds, or reptiles. Visiting the many local nature preserves and parks is a place of social interaction. No matter the time, you'll bump into someone you know or receive a friendly wave from a stranger. The joy for flora and fauna within our town connects us all, creating a wonderful community.

Featuring Beloved Pets: Mei (cat), Reykur (Icelandic sheepdog), Carmella (rescue mixed breed), Moo (bunny)

Mara was an art director for children's publishing for many years, most notably for The Walt Disney Company's children's books division in Manhattan. She worked at Reader's Digest Children's Publishing for 10 years after that, as an art director and book product developer. Afterward, she began writing and illustrating her own books for Simon & Schuster. Mara and her husband, Matt, moved to Chappaqua in 1994 and raised two wonderful boys here. During the boy's time at Greeley, Mara served on the PTA hospitality committee, organizing dinners and lunches throughout the year. She loved meeting and talking with the teachers and staff in a relaxed environment. Mara is currently a non-riding member of the Chappaqua Ambulance Corps, helping with recruiting, fundraising, and design. She participates in the Chappaqua Children's Book Festival each year and loves seeing the community come together for this special event.
