What influenced you to choose to be a doctor? Always wanted to help others get better and medicine and health always appealed to me.  I was always impressed with the doctors i saw when I was younger and i wanted to be like them.

What made you choose your specialty? Selected orthopedic surgery because it really aligned with my personal outlook.  I want to help people get better by doing something about it.  The hands on engagement with surgery is much more satisfying than diagnosing/prescribing/follow-up.  In orthopedics, I am doing something to restore the patient functionally.  The patient gets better and then gets back to what they want and need to do in life.

Advice for aspiring doctors: It’s a long road but is worth it.

Fun fact: Dr. Scales has 4 daughters who have/are attending West Point.
