Veteran Duo Share their Serene Backyard Design

Some people see a backyard as just green space—but Peter and Kimberly Thompson saw theirs as an opportunity to build a retreat. Since moving to Chateau Elan’s Brookstone section nearly two years ago, they’ve transformed their property into a place where natural beauty and thoughtful design come together.

Their landscape blends structure and softness, with stone borders framing trees and shrubs, and seasonal color from azaleas, hydrangeas, knockout roses, and rhododendrons. Each plant adds a different rhythm to the yard, making it feel alive year-round.

A set of stone stairs is the centerpiece, cascading gently down the slope to a tucked-away patio. It’s here that the couple spends much of their time—whether sipping coffee in the morning, winding down in the evening, or sharing time with friends. “We love our stone stairs and patio because they create a natural flow through the landscape, inviting us to slow down and enjoy the journey,” they explain. “The patio is our favorite place to unwind. It’s more than just a backyard feature—it’s where memories are made.”

The project came to life with the help of Lady Landscape, whose vision and execution turned the couple’s ideas into reality. Weekly care and seasonal touches keep the space looking its best, making it both inviting and easy to enjoy.

Life in Chateau Elan extends beyond their backyard. Kimberly is active in the Women’s Club, the couple enjoys their supper club, and as wine lovers, they’ve found a perfect match in the Chateau Elan winery and all it offers.

When it comes to advice for neighbors thinking about their own outdoor spaces, Peter and Kimberly keep it simple: “Regardless of how you design your landscape, ensure it incorporates all the beautiful features and characteristics that will bring you and your family peace, serenity, and joy for many years.”

What began as a yard has become something more—a place that welcomes relaxation and moments worth remembering.
