FLORAL VISIONS

This mother-daughter team of Berkin Flowers is creating a blooming family legacy

Nestled in the heart of Hingham and deeply rooted in resilience, Berkin Flowers is more than just a floral design studio—it’s a living tribute to family, love, and the healing power of beauty.

Founded by Lisa Berkin, Berkin Flowers began as a personal passion project in the aftermath of unimaginable loss. After moving to Hingham in 1996 with her husband, David, Lisa embraced her love of gardening, cultivating pollinator-friendly gardens and building a life immersed in nature. But in 2004, David tragically passed away. To cope with her grief, Lisa turned her energy to flowers—a small step toward healing that would eventually blossom into a thriving business.

“David had always been the one to encourage my dreams,” Lisa reflects. “Starting the flower business helped fill the void and gave me purpose.” What began as seasonal container gardens slowly expanded into custom floral arrangements, weddings and events, holiday wreaths, and bouquet subscriptions. Over time, Lisa’s homegrown approach and eye for design earned her a devoted following across the South Shore.

In 2022, Lisa’s daughter Shira joined the business full-time. A graduate of Babson College, Shira brought not only a creative spark but also fresh business insight that helped modernize and scale the business. Together, the mother-daughter duo rebranded as Berkin Flowers, signaling the beginning of a true family enterprise.

“While the business began with the horror of losing my husband, it has transformed into the dream that many parents have–of running a family business,” Lisa says.

Shira’s touch has been transformational. From launching a streamlined website to expanding wedding and event offerings, her contributions have elevated the brand while staying true to its roots.

One of the most meaningful additions? A metal sign Shira gifted Lisa that reads David’s Garden, now hanging at the entrance to their flower farm—the very place where David and Lisa first dreamed of their future together. “It’s a reminder that dreams never die if they’re powerful enough,” Lisa says.

Today, Berkin Flowers offers a blend of authenticity and floral artistry. With many blooms grown on-site in Hingham, including heirloom dahlias, ranunculus, and peonies, their arrangements are infused with local charm and seasonal beauty.

“As farmer-florists, we combine our knowledge of cultivating specialty florals with classical design to create unique arrangements made with care,” Lisa says. “Knowing what’s in season helps us design pieces that feel fresh, whimsical, and true to the moment.”

In addition to weddings and other special events, Berkin Flowers is known for its lush seasonal containers and daily floral deliveries. They also cultivate a community presence at happenings like the Hingham Arts Walk, St. John’s Holiday Boutique, and NVNA & Hospice’s annual fundraiser, The 12, as well as their work with the Hingham Garden Club and partnerships with other Massachusetts flower growers.

In the early days, Lisa juggled everything alone. But with Shira’s help and the addition of team member Sarah Carolan, Berkin Flowers has bloomed into a collaborative, vibrant operation. “We’ve grown in a way that’s both sustainable and exciting,” Lisa shares.

Looking ahead, the Berkins plan to expand their wedding and event work, grow even more specialty blooms, and offer container gardens to more homes and businesses throughout the South Shore. Yet, at its heart, Berkin Flowers remains dedicated to one simple mission: to share joy, beauty, and connection through flowers.

“We like to say flowers make everything better, and science agrees!” Lisa says. “Studies show that fresh flowers can boost your mood and reduce stress. Whether it’s a bud vase on your desk, a planter by your front door, or a full arrangement in your kitchen, flowers bring joy.” And when they’re locally grown, the benefits are even sweeter.

Wedding clients have been thrilled with their vision. “Lisa and Shira were an absolute dream to work with,” says Susanna H. “They created the most beautiful arrangements for our daughter’s wedding. They listened to her and created exactly what she was hoping for. The entire process was seamless from our first meeting to day of delivery. We cannot recommend Berkin Flowers more emphatically!”

For Lisa and Shira, the business is more than just bouquets and centerpieces. It’s a way to honor David’s memory, share their love of nature, and bring people together—one bloom at a time.
