Building an Inclusive Community: Soar and Special Olympics Area 8

In South Carolina's picturesque Lowcountry, a remarkable movement is reshaping lives and fostering community spirit, led by Soar, the dedicated Area Director for Area 8 within the Special Olympics network. With a steadfast commitment to empowerment and inclusion, Soar is providing individuals with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to engage in the joy of sports and recreation.

Founded in 2016 by passionate special education teacher Kathy Cramer, Soar originated with just 53 athletes. Today, it has flourished into a vibrant community, proudly serving over 550 athletes across Beaufort, Jasper, and Colleton Counties. This substantial growth is a testament to the organization's dedication to developing sustainable programs tailored to meet the unique needs of the local community.

Soar offers both youth and adult programs, providing a diverse range of activities including horseback riding, pickleball, kayaking, and golf, just to name a few. This inclusive approach ensures that participants of all ages can enjoy the benefits of sports and recreation.

A significant milestone in Soar's journey was the recognition of the Special Olympics as an official school sport by both Beaufort and Jasper Counties. This pivotal designation has transformed the landscape for young athletes, facilitating crucial transportation during school hours.

“Our mission at Soar is clear,” said Cramer. “We aim to enhance the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities through engaging sports and recreational activities. Our vision is to cultivate an inclusive community where every person is valued, empowered, and granted access to a healthy, active lifestyle.”

The impact of Soar is felt not only by the athletes but also by their families. One athlete, Joey, shared, “I love weightlifting with my friends! It makes me feel strong.” His mother echoed those sentiments, adding, “Soar has provided Joey with confidence and joy. It's not just about sports; it's about friendships and feeling included in our community.”

While the partnership with Special Olympics provides invaluable support and inspiration, Soar remains focused on strategic planning and community engagement to sustain its operations and further its goals. The organization actively seeks dedicated fundraising efforts to expand its outreach and impact within the area.

As Soar continues to grow, it stands as a beacon of hope and opportunity, ensuring that every athlete has the chance to shine both on and off the field. Their unwavering commitment is not just about changing lives; it's about creating a brighter future for the entire community.

Community members are encouraged to get involved, whether as coaches, unified partners competing alongside athletes, or through planning events. Donations and efforts to spread the word are always appreciated.
