Cortona, Italy — Nestled in the rolling hills of Tuscany, the picturesque town of Cortona became the perfect backdrop for a memorable family getaway this past July. Known for its charming streets and stunning vistas, Cortona is also famed for being the filming location of the beloved movie Under the Tuscan Sun.

Cultural Highlights in Florence

Our adventure began with a day trip to Florence, where we visited the renowned Galleria Palatina. The family was captivated by the rich collection of Renaissance masterpieces, marveling art works by the likes of Raphael and Titian. After soaking in the art, we strolled across the iconic Ponte Vecchio bridge, enjoying the vibrant atmosphere and the array of jewelry shops that lined the pathway.

Culinary Experiences and Local Flavors

The culinary aspect of our trip was equally exciting. A cooking class with Ambrosia, organized by Hill Town Tours, allowed us to dive into Tuscan cuisine. Under the guidance of Chef Matteo, we prepared traditional dishes, from fresh pasta to savory sauces. The experience culminated in a delicious meal, enjoyed together as a family. Unbeknownst to Chef Matteo and his family until recent renovations to open the restaurant, the medieval building was constructed right on top of an ancient Etruscian bath, which Chef Matteo has uncovered and incorporated into his restaurant. The back wall is ancient stone that the water runs across after a rain, into the lower-level bath which you can view through the glass floor. This place has it all: ambiance, authenticity, unforgettable cuisine, and top-rate service. Chef Matteo was a gracious host.

Gelato tasting became a delightful daily ritual as the time of year we visited was very hot. Cartona is appealing at just about any time of the year, but the most popular seasons are late spring and early fall.  So we enjoyed our gelato sitting on the steps of the Historical Center, savoring creamy cones while people-watching. Each gelato shop offered unique flavors, making it a fun challenge to discover our favorites, including pistachio, chocolate, and limon.

Wineries and Scenic Views

Our exploration of Tuscany also led us to several local wineries. A standout was Podere Il Fitto, where we enjoyed tastings of rich Chiantis and learned about the winemaking process. The winery’s stunning views of the surrounding vineyards made the experience even more memorable.

After a day filled with exploration, we indulged in delicious meals at Ristorante La Loggetta and Trattoria Dardano. Both establishments offered authentic Tuscan dishes that left our family raving about the flavors long after our plates were cleared.

Historic Sights and Scenic Vistas

Back in Cortona, our family explored historic sites, including the Fortress of Girifalco and the Church of Santa Margherita, where breathtaking views of the countryside awaited us. We also visited the Church of Santa Maria Nuova, taking in the beautiful architecture and serene atmosphere.

As our vacation drew to a close, our family reflected on the blend of art, food, and breathtaking landscapes that Tuscany offered. With plans to return in the future, we left Cortona with cherished memories and a deeper appreciation for this magical region of Italy.

This family adventure was more than just a vacation; it was a beautiful exploration of culture, cuisine, and connection, set against the stunning backdrop of Tuscany. With plans to return one day, we know that the enchanting landscapes and warm hospitality of Tuscany will always beckon us back.
