Finding Her Stride

Allie Beck’s Journey in the Hunter and Jumper Rings

Allie Beck, a rising senior at Plant High School, has spent most of her life around horses. Introduced to riding through her grandparents at a young age, she quickly found herself drawn to the structure, challenge, and quiet confidence the sport demands.

She trains in English riding, focusing on both the hunter and jumper rings. Her two horses, Northern Exposure (Larry) and Costello (Lando), have played different roles in her journey. Larry is her steady and experienced jumper, while Lando is a newer partner still learning to trust. “When I walk into the barn, they both yell at me,” Allie laughs. “They’re truly part of my life.”

To an outsider, riding might look graceful and effortless, but Allie emphasizes how mentally demanding it really is. Riders have to stay calm, confident, and in sync with their horse, especially under pressure. “Horses pick up on everything. If you’re anxious, they feel it,” she explains. “You have to stay mentally sharp every time you ride.”

That focus and discipline carried her to one of her proudest achievements, competing at the National Horse Show. After months of preparation and hard work, finishing her round was a moment of quiet pride.

Living on Davis Islands has made balancing school and sport easier. With Plant’s flexible schedule, Allie attends five class periods a day, giving her time to train consistently while staying on top of schoolwork and club involvement.

Looking ahead, she hopes to keep competing while maintaining amateur status. “I hope to continue riding competitively throughout my life, although I plan to have an amateur status rather than pursuing a professional career.”
