The Laid Back Golfer Ladies
The Laid Back Golfer Ladies, women’s golf group, is building friendships, confidence, and fun through low-pressure play and is creating a welcoming community on and off the course.
On any given Thursday afternoon at Del Rio Country Club, something special is happening out on the course—and it’s bringing women together in a way that feels equal parts empowering, social, and just plain fun.
Inspired by the success of the men’s LBG group, this women’s group was created with a simple but meaningful goal: to build a space where women of all skill levels could connect, play, and enjoy the game together. “We saw how much fun the guys were having,” the organizers, Jennifer Hutton and Catrina Girard, share, “and thought—why not create that same experience for the ladies, but with our own twist?” What started as an idea quickly turned into a thriving, welcoming community.
And “welcoming” is exactly the word that keeps coming up. The vibe? “Fun, encouraging, and full of connection,” Jennifer says. While there’s certainly room to grow your golf game, the heart of the group lies in the friendships forming along the fairways. “Women encouraging women—that’s what makes it so special.”
In fact, one of the biggest surprises has been just how meaningful those connections have become. “I had seen so many of these women around the club before,” Jennifer explains, “but through this group, I’ve really gotten to know them. They’ve become amazing friends.” The response has outdistanced all of Jennifer and Catrinas’ expectations.
That sense of excitement was especially clear on Opening Day, March 12, 2026—a standout moment that perfectly captured the spirit of the group. After a winter indoors, the energy was unmistakable. “It was a beautiful day, and everyone was just so excited to be back out there together,” Jennifer recalls. “You could feel it—everyone was ready.”
Part of what makes the group so approachable is its intentionally low-pressure format. Golfers are paired to balance experience levels, often matching seasoned players with beginners, and rounds are played as a scramble—an easygoing, team-based format that keeps things moving and social. “We’re very upfront. This isn’t a super competitive environment. It’s about having fun and enjoying the game.”
A typical Thursday looks like this: tee time around 3:00 p.m., playing the Open 9 alongside the men’s group schedule. Teams rotate weekly, keeping things fresh and giving everyone a chance to meet new people. After the final putt drops, there’s often one more highlight—gathering on the patio for dinner, laughter, and a little post-round storytelling.
For women who might feel hesitant to step onto the course, Jennifer and Catrina’s message is simple: “Come try it. It’s friendly, it’s low-stakes, and it’s completely judgment-free.” In other words, exactly the kind of environment that makes trying something new feel easy.
Looking ahead, the group has no plans of slowing down. With 42 members already connected through their GroupMe and growing interest each week, the focus is on continuing to build both skills and community. There are goals to improve scoring and sharpen fundamentals like short game and fairway accuracy—but just as important are the traditions taking shape, from their now-beloved Opening Day to plans for a big end-of-season celebration.
At its core, this group is about more than golf. It’s about showing up, cheering each other on, and creating space for connection—one Thursday afternoon at a time.
