There are places you walk into and immediately sense something different is happening. Rare Earth Gallery in Cave Creek, Arizona, is one of those places. The story of how it all began reads like something from another era, driven by a simple instinct to find beauty in the earth and share it with others.

Wayne Helfand has spent more than 40 years working with gems, minerals, and natural art. At 19, he went to work in an Australian opal mine. He returned home with a sock full of opals, sold them for $5,000, and never considered another path. His career grew from those early days, taking Wayne through a gemologist certification from the Gemological Institute of America, a silver jewelry company, an art glass business, mineral wholesaling, and retail. 

He expanded to Sedona in 2010 before relocating to Cave Creek in 2012. By 2013, he launched Rare Earth Gallery as a distinct destination. The current building opened in the fall of 2018. Today, it stands as a 10,000-square-foot indoor showroom with a full acre of outdoor gallery space. The location has been recognized by Phoenix Magazine as Best of the Valley for 11 consecutive years and named a Top 10 Art Gallery by Phoenix New Times and AZ Big Media.

Walking through the building means moving through a space Wayne describes as part natural history museum, part art gallery, part home decor showroom, part outdoor fountain store, and part fine jewelry boutique. More than 200 natural stone fountains run continuously throughout the space. Authentic fossils, collector mineral specimens, pure quartz singing bowls, outdoor landscape sculptures, and genuine meteorites share the showroom floor with gemstone jewelry ranging from wire-wrapped earrings to collector pieces.

Every category is deep, and nothing arrives by accident. Wayne and his wife Stefi, who serves as Director of Acquisitions, work alongside executive Vice President Chad Brandfass and Vice President Grant Madsen to hand-select every item. Chad has been Wayne's trusted right hand for more than 20 years, while Grant joined the leadership team in 2024.

Together, they source pieces directly from miners, artisans, and dealers in Thailand, Brazil, Spain, China, India, Madagascar, and Mexico. Nothing is bought in bulk. The Gallery also operates its own metal fabrication studio to produce custom stands and displays, and offers white-glove delivery and installation for large pieces throughout the region.

Cave Creek feels like the right home for all of this. The town's rugged, independent character mirrors what the Gallery represents. Rare Earth has occupied three of the four corners at Cave Creek Road and School House Road over the years.
