Sam Weitzman: Driven by Team and Competition
A two-sport captain making the most of his final season
What school do you attend and what year are you in?
I am currently a senior at Dover Sherborn Regional High School.
What sports do you play? How long have you been playing? Which one is your favorite?
I am the captain of both the basketball and lacrosse teams here at Dover Sherborn HS. I've been playing basketball for as long as I can remember, but didn't start playing lacrosse until the 8th grade. It's hard to pick a favorite between the two since they're completely different sports, but I enjoy the level of physicality in lacrosse.
What inspired you to get started with basketball and lacrosse?
My brothers are the ones who inspired me. Playing one-on-one basketball in our driveway really sparked my passion for the game, and watching them win state championships with their lacrosse teams helped grow my love for lacrosse.
What positions do you play? Do you have a favorite?
I played forward in basketball and am a close defender in lacrosse.
What do you enjoy most about playing sports?
I enjoy the competition. Going head-to-head against your teammates every day during practice causes you to grow closer as a team and pushes everyone to improve.
What is your proudest moment? Who do you have to thank for helping you get there?
My proudest moment was this past basketball season when my team and I blew out Medfield 78-54, handing them their only TVL loss of that season. That game showed our team's growth and ability to perform as a unit. I thank my co-captain Ronan Sullivan and my teammates for that amazing win and a great season overall.
Who is someone that you admire and inspires you? Why?
I'm inspired by my mom. I admire her positive attitude, which always keeps me in a good mood even after a tough loss or a bad day at school.
What goals do you have for the upcoming season?
My goal for this upcoming lacrosse season is to have fun and make the most of my final months as a senior in high school. I can't think of a better way to do than to help lead my team to a successful season this spring.
Beyond sports, what else do you like to do? Are you involved with any other extracurricular
activities?
Outside of sports, I like to listen to music and spend time with friends and family. My grandparents live in Marshfield, and I enjoy visiting them and spending time on the beach.
