Meet Chloe: The Sweetest Dog on the Block

What is the name of your pet? Does he/she have a nickname? What is the breed and age?

Chloe is a Bernese Mountain Dog who turned 1 in February.

Who are the other members of the pet’s family?

Chloe lives with me (Jackie), Erik, Connor (10) and Abigail (8)

What is Chloe's personality? Angel or a bit of a troublemaker? Spoiled? Protective?

Chloe is sweet, social, and very, very friendly — always ready to make a new friend and capable of improving anyone’s mood in under a minute. She loves the outdoors: hikes through Noanet, swimming at her favorite dog pond on the Cape, and most of all, playing in the snow in the mountains. This was her first Winter and it was everything she had ever hoped for with all the snow. She actively seeks out the deepest drifts so she can frolic through piles of fluffy snow, and she stayed loyal to the very last patch of snow in our yard right up until it disappeared.

Does Chloe have any specific talents?

Chloe is not exactly known for athletic greatness, which feels very on brand for a Bernese Mountain Dog. Her talents are more in the areas of making friends, cuddling, and always being exactly where the people are. She is also an excellent lounger — after expending energy in the snow or chasing a falling leaf, she can nap like a true professional.

What is Chloe's biggest fear?

Being left behind on a road trip. If Chloe has even the slightest sense that someone may be getting in the car, she moves at top speed to jump in too. I would be lying if I didn’t admit I’ve gotten halfway down the driveway before realizing she somehow snuck into the back seat of the car (don’t ask me how a clumsy 80-lb dog manages to be stealth in that moment)

Is there anything other neighbors or pets would know your pet for?

She is probably best known for the day she took off after the school bus and needed much of the neighborhood to help wrangle her back. These days she has an electric fence and prefers a quieter routine — sitting right at the edge of the driveway and people-watching while patiently waiting for school to get out.

What is the story of the day where your pet and family met?

The story of Chloe really started years earlier, when Connor (now 10) was about 2 and began asking for a dog. We told him he could have one when he was older, and being the detail-oriented kid he is, he immediately wanted a specific age. We said 9, and he absolutely held us to it. When the time came, Connor and Erik drove to New Hampshire to get Chloe, and once she got home, it felt like she had been part of our family forever.

Does Chloe get along with the other pets in the neighborhood?

Very much so. Chloe loves my parents’ yellow lab Stevie. In the winters, we spend a lot of time in Maine at Sugarloaf, where our neighbor has a Bernedoodle named Amos who is Chloe’s absolute best friend in the world. We are also very excited that another Bernedoodle just moved onto our street here 😊

Has Chloe ever run away or gotten into trouble?

Chloe would probably say the school bus incident was less “getting into trouble” and more “an ambitious independent outing.”

What is Chloe most grateful for?

Connor and Abigail, for sure. She waits patiently for them to get home from school, loves playing “Chloe hide-and-seek” with them — she is always the seeker — and is happiest cuddling with them on the couch at the end of the day. After the kids, her greatest love is definitely peanut butter.
