Canton Mart Square: Three Generations Strong
Canton Mart Square is a 3rd generation owned and operated shopping center in NE Jackson. The center was established in 1966 by Dr. Hugh G. Ward and his wife, Joe Ann Ward. That first 5,000 square foot building was the beginning of the seven building, 80,000 square foot campus of 24 local shopkeepers and professional service providers.
Today, their nephew, Steve Baker, and his daughter, Stephanie Maley, manage and operate the neighborhood-friendly shopping center. Three businesses have been in continuous operation for the entire 60 year life of the shopping center. They include Briarwood Animal Hospital, Briarwood Wine & Spirits, and The Book Rack. Other merchants include The Hickory Pit, a fixture since 1979, Odom’ Eye Care, Latitudes Furniture, Squared Girl, Basics Boutique, Sea & West, The Persimmon Tree, Monogram Magic, Fierce Nutrition, View Gallery, and the ever popular eatery, Crazy Cat / Eat Up.
Stephanie's involvement in the business marks the 3rd generation of the Ward family in the management of Canton Mart Square, which leans into its family-owned and neighborhood-focused atmosphere that engages and involves the community.
