Bright Smiles and Warm Hearts

Dr. O and Her Team at 45 Smull Avenue

For nearly a decade, residents of Caldwell and neighboring Essex Fells have found a reason to smile a little brighter, thanks to Dr. Stacy E. Oberfield, DDS, affectionately known by her patients as Dr. O. Her dental practice at 45 Smull Avenue has become a local fixture for compassionate care, professional excellence, and true community connection.
Dr. O opened her Caldwell office in 2016, bringing with her more than 35 years of experience in dentistry. “This community felt like home,” she says. “It’s warm, welcoming, and family-centered, everything I wanted for my practice.” Her journey into dentistry began with a simple desire to help people feel more confident and comfortable with their smiles. Over the years, that mission has grown into a thriving, relationship-centered practice where every patient is treated like family.
Behind every great dentist is a great team, and Dr. O’s staff is no exception. She describes them as a close-knit group built on mutual respect, teamwork, and a shared commitment to learning and growth. “Each member brings unique strengths,” she explains. “Together, we provide individualized, high-quality care.” Patients often remark that walking into Dr. O’s office feels more like visiting friends than going to a medical appointment.
What truly sets the practice apart is its personalized approach. “Every patient has their own story and needs,” Dr. O says. “We take the time to listen and tailor treatment accordingly.” The practice is also known for its expertise in sedation dentistry, especially for patients with special needs or dental anxiety. “Sedation helps patients relax and complete the treatment they need, often in one visit,” she adds.
Dr. O’s compassionate care extends far beyond her office walls. Each holiday season, she organizes a gift drive for The Valerie Fund, which provides comprehensive care to children with cancer and blood disorders and their families. She also sponsors a local Little League team and hosts an annual “Dentistry from the Heart” event, offering free dental services to members of the community. These efforts reflect her deep belief in giving back and helping others feel supported and cared for. “Staying connected to the people around me is important,” she says. “It gives me the chance to really know my neighbors, families, and local business owners.”
Patients have taken notice of that warmth and dedication. One longtime patient shared, “They are the best! Every staff member is fantastic and super friendly. I used to be scared of going to the dentist and needed gas just for a cleaning. Now, I can get any procedure done with confidence.” Another, Ben B., appreciated the team’s technology and communication: “The new patient experience was great. Seeing photos of your teeth really gives peace of mind. You can understand what you’re caring for, even the parts you can’t see yourself.”
When she’s not creating beautiful smiles, Dr. O enjoys cooking, gardening, and exploring cultural events with her daughter, Sophie. “Broadway plays and seasonal outings are always on our to-do list,” she says with a grin.
Her advice for a healthy smile is simple but essential: “Flossing is just as important as brushing.” Her advice for life is just as practical: “Work hard, follow your dreams, and never give up.”
For Dr. O, the heart of her practice is helping people achieve healthy, confident smiles in a caring environment. “Most of our patients are already very dentally educated,” she says. “So being able to meet their needs, answer their questions, and help them understand their treatment, that’s incredibly rewarding.”
Whether you are a longtime resident or new to the area, Dr. O invites you to stop by and say hello. “Come visit me, especially if you’re dentally homeless,” she jokes warmly. “You’ll be in good hands here.”
