HOSS THE HOUND: THREE LEGS, ONE BIG HEART

A Survivor With a Big Heart
Hoss is a four-year-old Catahoula Leopard Tree Walking Coonhound Greyhound mix with a presence that feels larger than life. Though he may look like a big, happy hound today, Hoss’ journey began in heartbreak. Found starving and injured during a brutal summer, his story caught the attention of his now family through a Facebook plea. What started as a plan to foster for Route 66 Pet Rescue quickly turned into a forever home. You might even say it is one of the happiest foster failures imaginable.

From Heartbreak to Hope
Hoss’ story came into his family’s life at a tender moment. Just one week after saying goodbye to their beloved dog Gracie, who passed suddenly from a heart attack, a Facebook post appeared about a severely injured dog found south of Sanders Nursery. With temperatures soaring to 105 degrees, the situation felt urgent and impossible to ignore.

Trusting what felt like divine guidance, Hoss’ owner went out with the intention of fostering him temporarily. From the moment he was picked up, Hoss showed his gentle spirit. Once inside the cool air of the car, his new family watched him visibly relax, even smiling, as if he knew he was finally safe. That foster plan quickly became permanent.

A Big Dog With an Even Bigger Personality
Hoss was named during his first visit to the veterinarian. Severely underweight and nearly 20 pounds lighter than he should have been, his new owner wanted a name that reflected who she hoped he would become. Inspired by Hoss Cartwright from the television series Bonanza, the name felt perfect for a dog destined to be a big, happy fellow.

Despite only having one functional eye and a non-restorable Achilles tendon tear, Hoss does not let his past define him. He runs confidently on three legs and, according to his family, is the fastest three-legged dog they have ever seen. He loves people, especially children, and has a signature hound dog howl that makes his opinions known. If you stop petting him too soon, he will let you know that was not acceptable.

Life in Forest Ridge
Hoss lives in the Stanford’s Landing area of Forest Ridge with his devoted family, including his human dad Beau, who shares an especially close bond with him. Known for his obedience, Hoss respects the invisible fence boundaries so well that his family jokes he knows them a little too well.

He is delightfully spoiled in all the right ways. Walks are his favorite activity, and the sight of running shoes sends him into excited howls. He also has an internal clock that tells him exactly when it is 5 pm, feeding time, which is another highlight of his day.

A Healing Bond
More than just a pet, Hoss has been a source of healing. After the loss of Gracie, his arrival brought comfort, purpose, and renewed joy. His family truly believes they were brought together for a reason. In rescuing Hoss, they found themselves rescued as well.

With three legs, one big heart, and a joyful howl that echoes through the neighborhood, Hoss is a powerful reminder of the resilience of animals and the quiet miracles that come from opening your heart when it matters most.
