Fireworks, Fast Boats & a Dog Named Tybee
In The Highlands of Forest Ridge, the Gentry family’s home is filled with adventure, laughter, and plenty of wagging tails—all thanks to their beloved dog, Tybee. For Mike, Bridgette, Wyatt, and Weston, Tybee isn’t just a pet—she’s been part of the family for nearly her entire life, growing up right alongside the boys and creating memories that have become part of their family story.
Tybee, a seven-year-old Border Collie mix, first entered their lives when she was just 10 weeks old. The family had gone to an adoption event hosted by a local rescue group, hoping to find the right dog. While most of the puppies were drawing attention from eager families, Tybee was doing something a little different. “She was asleep in her crate the entire time, so no one was looking at her,” Bridgette shared. “We woke her up, and the boys fell in love with her immediately.” That moment would change everything.
Tybee’s name carries special meaning for the family. She’s named after one of their favorite family vacations to Tybee Island, a place filled with happy memories and adventure—much like Tybee herself. And, according to the family, when she’s in trouble, she gets her full name: Tybee Island.
Over the years, Tybee’s personality has made her unforgettable to everyone who meets her. She has some quirks that set her apart from most dogs. For starters, she absolutely loves the hose—especially when the water is sprayed directly in her face. While many dogs shy away from loud noises, Tybee takes a completely different approach to fireworks. “Most dogs are scared of fireworks,” the family said. “Tybee jumps in the air trying to catch them.”
She’s also a huge fan of boating. During the summer, the family spends nearly every day out on their tritoon, and Tybee has become a seasoned first mate. In fact, if the boat isn’t moving fast enough, she’ll let everyone know.
“She will cry until the boat speeds up so she can have the wind in her hair,” Bridgette laughed.
Tybee is just as happy on land as she is on the water. Camping trips, hiking adventures, family outings—Tybee is always ready to go. Her easygoing nature is one of the things the family loves most about her.
One of their favorite memories comes from when Wyatt and Weston were younger. During summer afternoons, the boys would race down the slip-and-slide—but Tybee often beat them to it.
“The kids would get frustrated because Tybee wouldn’t give them a turn,” Bridgette said.
Like any well-loved family dog, Tybee has earned her share of spoiling. Because of food allergies, many of her treats now consist of fresh fruits and vegetables. Whenever the boys grab a snack, Tybee expects one too. And when it’s time to rest, she prefers the couch—surrounded by no fewer than three pillows.
More than anything, Tybee has helped teach Wyatt and Weston responsibility. From feeding her and walking her to giving her daily medication, caring for Tybee has become part of their everyday lives.
After seven years, one thing is certain: the Gentry family can’t imagine life without Tybee. In their home, she’s much more than a dog—she’s family.
