Looking Back On A Night Of Generosity
Defying Hunger Gala Raises $157,000 for Local Families

On Friday, April 25, Broken Arrow Neighbors hosted its annual fundraising gala, Defying Hunger, at the elegant historic Mayo Hotel. Inspired by the Broadway classic and now movie, Wicked, the event brought together over 150 supporters, partners, and community members for an unforgettable night of generosity and celebration.
The evening was masterfully emceed by local media personality Julie Chin, and themed décor in shades of pink and green gave a playful nod to Ga-linda and Elphaba, the heart of Wicked, while creating a warm, community-driven atmosphere. The best surprise of the night? A special video message from original Ga-linda herself, Broken Arrow native, Kristin Chenoweth, telling the crowd, “thank you for helping our neighbors in need, right here in Broken Arrow!”
Highlights of the evening included our live auction featuring one-of-a-kind items, including “A Year of Dates” package, an exclusive “Wicked Weekend” (complete with dinner, hotel stay, and tickets to the musical), and a striking original painting by artist Whitt Todd. The evening also included a raffle for a stunning 10 ct. pink gemstone known as “Glinda’s Ring,” which added an extra touch of pink magic. To top it off, Broken Arrow Neighbors Board President, Andrea Tucker, was awarded our first, “Defying Limits” award!
Speakers Ray Neal, gala committee co-chair and board member; Kelly Sanders, Broken Arrow Neighbors Executive Board Secretary; and Executive Director, Megan Quickle reflected on the organization’s growth and mission. Their heartfelt words underscored the real impact of the night: the $157,000 raised will directly support Broken Arrow Neighbors’ core programs—our Neighbor’s Choice Curbside Pantry program, emergency financial assistance, career mentorship, and the beloved “Joy for Your Neighbors” holiday meal and gift initiative! Our 2025 gala would not have been possible without the dedication of the Broken Arrow Neighbors staff team and our truly amazing, co-chairs, Cynthia Swinehart and Ray Neal!
“Defying Hunger was our moment to defy gravity – rising above challenges with heart, courage, and unity to ensure no one in our community faces hunger alone,” said Quickle. “This work is only possible because of the compassion of this community.”
Thanks to the generosity of donors, sponsors, and volunteers, Defying Hunger was not only a beautiful event—it was a powerful act of local love and support. As guests mingled beneath chandeliers and toasted to a future without hunger, one thing was clear: there’s no place like home, especially when neighbors care for one another.
