Some pets come into our lives through careful planning. Others show up unexpectedly and somehow become exactly who we needed. That’s the story of Puppy, a beloved Forest Ridge resident with a big heart, a watchful eye, and a special place in the Scott household.

Puppy, estimated to be a mix of Labrador Retriever with maybe a little beagle or even Basset hound, has been part of the family for nearly nine and a half years. His story began near the QuikTrip at 71st and County Line Road, where Charles Scott found him searching for the car that had left him behind.

Charles brought him home, but there was one condition: they weren’t keeping him.

Well… that plan lasted about three days.

After initially insisting he wouldn’t stay, Charles’s wife ended up giving him a name, and that was that. Puppy officially became family.

Now 10 years old and living in the Villas section of Forest Ridge, Puppy has fully embraced his role in the neighborhood. Around home, he’s known for one particularly important responsibility: protecting Forest Ridge from turtles. Whether they actually need protection is still up for debate, but Puppy takes the assignment seriously.

Like many cherished pets, Puppy enjoys the good life. Charles proudly admits Puppy is spoiled and even cooks for him, because he deserves a little extra care.

But beyond the quirks and daily routines, Puppy means something deeper.

When asked what he likes best about his dog, Charles answered simply: “He’s my best bud.”

And when asked how Puppy has enriched their family, the response was even more meaningful: “He helps me to keep going.”

It’s a reminder that pets often give us much more than companionship. They offer comfort, consistency, laughter, and someone to greet us at the door no matter what kind of day we’ve had.

Puppy may have started as an unexpected guest, but he became exactly what he was meant to be, a loyal friend, a neighborhood protector, and one very loved member of the family.
