Love Found Next Door

John Enger and Danielle Zwick’s love story could only unfold in a place as close-knit and charming as Gates Mills. Although both grew up in Cleveland, they took different paths before finding themselves neighbors on Robinwood Lane in the summer of 2020.

John moved into his home that May, while Danielle had returned from Los Angeles to stay with her mother during the COVID-19 pandemic. Little did they know, that chance proximity would spark a relationship that has since blossomed into a lifelong commitment.

The neighbors took notice before they did, with a few trying to nudge John toward the “cute neighbor.” Danielle’s mother even dropped hints now and then, mentioning the “cute boy next door.” Despite the nudges, John and Danielle’s connection wasn’t immediate. However, one day, Danielle, lacking John’s phone number, decided to walk over and ask him to take her to his family’s horse farm in Chesterland—a place she was curious about. That simple request marked the start of something special.

Soon after, some of John’s pickleball friends were visiting and suggested he host a bonfire. He invited Danielle, and the rest is history. Their first official date was at the Cleveland Museum of Art, where they enjoyed sushi and explored the museum’s exhibits. This spot later became even more significant when John proposed to Danielle on the museum’s steps, making the Art Museum a cherished symbol of their journey together.

Both John and Danielle are food enthusiasts who love exploring new restaurants. A favorite of theirs is Coppia in Chesterland, which John describes as “unbelievable.” They appreciate the restaurant’s seasonal menu, which offers something new each visit. In addition to their culinary adventures, they enjoy traveling, especially on road trips. One of their favorite destinations is Niagara-on-the-Lake, where they’ve returned several times to relax and unwind. They also love spending time outdoors, whether hiking in Holden Arboretum or walking through the scenic paths of Gates Mills—a ritual that allowed them to deepen their connection during the early days of their relationship.

For nights in, Danielle says she loves “just being home”—her “love language,” as she calls it. John, who enjoys cooking, often whips up meals for them to savor together, appreciating the warmth and intimacy of home. Danielle, a Pilates enthusiast, finds joy in these quiet evenings, which balance their active social lives and provide cherished downtime together.

Both John and Danielle are deeply rooted in the Gates Mills community and feel incredibly grateful for the support and warmth of their neighbors. “We’re part of the Gates Mills community, and we’re here to support each other,” John says, calling it a group of “tight-knit, good people.” He reflects on the sense of belonging they feel, saying, “A lot of what I do wouldn’t have been possible without the Gates Mills community.” According to him, it’s rare to find a place where “everyone has everyone’s back” and puts community first.

Among their local favorites is Addie’s Cup, our beloved coffee shop. The café’s owner, Laura, has been a longtime supporter of their relationship, always cheering them on. For John and Danielle, Addie’s Cup isn’t just a spot for coffee—it’s a symbol of the community that has embraced them and their love story.

Family is at the heart of John and Danielle’s connection. Both come from large families and their shared love for family gatherings has become a core aspect of their relationship. Danielle notes they often spend more time with family than with friends, a testament to the strong family values they both hold dear. They cherish the holiday gatherings, whether at their own home in Gates Mills or at Danielle’s mother’s house nearby, where they create memories that reinforce their commitment to each other and to their roots.

Looking toward the future, John and Danielle are excited to continue building their life together. They’re grateful for the support and connections they’ve found here in Gates Mills. For them, Gates Mills isn’t just where they live—it’s the backdrop to their love story, the place where memories are made, and the community that has welcomed them with open arms.
