List of Ingredients
  • 1 box white cake mix
  • Eggs, oil, and water, as directed by cake mix instructions.
Pizza cake toppings
  • 1 can of ready-made vanilla frosting
  • One jar of red food coloring paste
  • 3 or 4 sheets of red fruit leather (cherry or strawberry)
  • One bar of white chocolate bark
  • One bag of black licorice
  • One box of chocolate-covered raisins
  • Three Ferrer Rocher hazelnut candies, cut in half
Cooking Instructions
Prepare the cake batter as directed. Grease a 10-inch pizza pan and pour in ½ to ¾ of the batter to prevent splitting. Bake at 350°F for 20-30 minutes, checking at 20 minutes to avoid overcooking. Let cool completely before decorating.
Decorating
Mix white chocolate with red food coloring for the ‘sauce.’ Microwave 4 tbsp of red frosting for 10 seconds, stir, and pour onto the cake, spreading with a spoon if needed. Leave a 2-inch border for the ‘crust.’
Grate white chocolate for ‘Parmesan’ and sprinkle over the ‘sauce.’ Use a 2-inch cookie cutter to cut red fruit leather into ‘pepperoni.’ Slice licorice into ‘olives,’ press in chocolate-covered raisins for ‘sausage,’ and halve hazelnut candies for ‘meatballs.’

Many pizza restaurants will give you a large pizza box to use for your cake, or they may charge a small fee of one or two dollars. Putting your pizza cake into a pizza box makes it an interesting surprise for recipients. Ensure that your cake is completely cooled before putting icing and toppings on. If your cake or the pan is still hot, it will melt the candies on top of the cake. You can add other toppings such as cut-up pieces of red and green Swedish fish as peppers.

What inspired you to make this dish?
I have always been fascinated by people who can make cakes that look like other items such as food, animals, jewelry, luggage, buildings, and people. I also wanted to make something different by entering into the cake-baking contest at our local county fair when I lived in San Benito County, California. My pizza cake won a first-place blue ribbon.
