Celebrating Chloe’s Sweet Sixteen

Type of animal/breed:
Shih tzu/ Maltese mix
Pet's Age: 16
When & where did you adopt your pet?
Bowling Green, KY. We adopted her from an acquaintance of my sister.
What made you decide to make your home your pet's forever home?
My husband and I had not been married long, and we fostered a golden retriever. After a few jumps over our fenced-in yard and chewing through the back door, we quickly discovered a small dog was a better fit for our future. It wasn't long after that that Chloe came into our lives. How did your pet get his/her name?
It's been 16 years, and I honestly can't remember. Chloe's mom had a litter of pups that were all named after holidays. Chloe's original name was Firecracker.
Does your pet have any favorite toys, places to sleep, visit, etc?
Chloe is a grandma who loves to sleep. She doesn't care where she sleeps as long as it's next to you. She likes to snuggle under the covers or nap on the back porch. Chloe does not discriminate between a snooze in the sun or a snore fest on her family's beds.
Tell us something quirky or funny that your pet does:
Chloe grew up with a pet cat named AJ. They spent many years rolling around Glen Oaks together. AJ sadly passed a few years ago, and Chloe lost her best friend. She's had a few friends along the way, but none like AJ. Chloe also snores louder than anyone else in the house. Many hours of sleep have been lost over her loud sleeping habits.
How has having your pet made your life better?
Chloe came to us at a sad time in our lives. My mom had just passed, and we needed someone to lighten the mood. Chloe did just that. She has been by our side through it all-Old houses, new houses, new babies growing into toddlers, and now teenage boys. She has gone from being the main attraction to being an observer of busy lives passing by her each day. Chloe has given us so much, and in her old age, we try to make these last years of her life as sweet as possible for her.
Is there anything else you want to tell the neighbors about your pet?
At 16 years old, Chloe has been there through it all. She is deaf and blind these days and often needs to be carried up and down steps, but she has proven to us that her job here on Earth is not quite done yet.  We don't know how much time she has left with us, but we certainly can't imagine life without her!
