Groupworks Psychological Services

Bringing Mental Health Care Home to Louisville

For two decades, Groupworks Psychological Services has been a trusted mental health resource for Louisville residents. Founded in 2005 by Dr. Tony Sheppard, Groupworks is more than just a therapy practice—it’s a community partner dedicated to helping people live healthier, happier lives.
Dr. Sheppard moved to Louisville in 1996 from Tennessee to pursue graduate studies at Spalding University. After earning his doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 2002, he chose to make Louisville his permanent home. Today, he lives in the area with his wife Rachel, who works as a director of medical research at the University of Louisville, and their two children, Lydia, who is completing her doctorate in clinical health psychology, and Matthew, who is studying auto mechanics at JCTC.
A Unique Approach to Mental Health Care
Inspired by a passion for group therapy, Dr. Sheppard launched Groupworks with the goal of providing meaningful and impactful mental health services to the Louisville community. Over the years, the practice has grown to include six psychologists and now offers a wide range of services, including individual, family, and group therapy, as well as psychological testing.
What really sets Groupworks apart is their unique focus on group psychotherapy. They’re proud to be the only practice in Kentucky with three Certified Group Psychotherapists on staff, which is a distinction that speaks to their specialized expertise. Their motto, “Bringing Psychology to Everyday Life,” reflects their belief that mental health care should be accessible, practical, and supportive for everyone.
But Groupworks’ impact goes beyond the therapy room. Dr. Sheppard and his team actively engage with the wider Louisville community by offering workshops, presentations, and consulting services to local businesses, schools, churches, and other organizations. Their goal is to help spread awareness and understanding of mental health issues, breaking down stigma and making it easier for people to ask for help when they need it.
Breaking the Stigma and Offering Support
One of the challenges Dr. Sheppard and his team face regularly is overcoming the stigma still attached to behavioral health. “We want people to understand that the brain is an organ just like any other part of the body,” he explains. “It needs care and nurturing too.” By changing the conversation around mental health, Groupworks helps clients feel empowered to seek support without shame.
When asked what advice he would give to Louisville residents about mental health, Dr. Sheppard keeps it simple: “If you’ve ever thought about asking whether you should see someone, the answer is probably yes. Talking to a professional can make a real difference.”
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Sheppard recently co-authored a book titled Group Psychotherapy with Children: Core Principles for Effective Practice (2024), highlighting his commitment to advancing mental health care not only locally but nationally.
