Joe and Misty Squillacioti: A Love Story in Harmony

How a Lifelong Romance, Lasting Friendships, and a Passion for Guitars Shaped One Musician’s Journey

My wife, Misty, and I are a love story that is part modern and part traditional. While we met online, we fell in love while walking through the trees of Minute Man National Park in Concord, MA. Today, Chapel Hill and Governors Club have become our home, holding a special place in our hearts. With daughters and grandchildren living in Massachusetts, and both our parents having passed it is the many lasting friendships we’ve built here that is special to us. In particular, Dick and Jill Horan, who we lovingly consider our southern parents. Walking through the beautiful Governors Club often reminds us of those early strolls through Minute Man Park. Now, we share our lives with our 9-year-old Golden Retriever, Brady, whose joyful presence makes every walk even more special.

Just as meaningful connections shape our lives, the right instrument can shape a musician’s journey. Reflecting on my first guitar, it’s clear how much has changed over the years—especially when it comes to beginner instruments. Instruments back then were almost universally poor. High action made them painful to play, they were hard to tune, and they lacked the “cool factor” of the guitars played by Jimmy Page or Eric Clapton. Those were the instruments that inspired kids like me—the ones on posters hanging on bedroom walls.

Fast forward to today, and the difference is staggering. Modern starter guitars are not only affordable but also designed for playability. Many brands now offer budget versions of iconic models. While these guitars are often made overseas, their quality far exceeds what was available to me as a beginner.

Starter packages now include everything a new player needs—straps, tuners, and even instructional materials— making it easier than ever to get started on the right note. A well-chosen instrument can support early progress and set the stage for long-term success and enjoyment.

With over 50 years of guitar playing and more than 30 guitars in my collection, I’ve developed an expertise in buying, selling, maintaining, and customizing instruments. From adjusting the truss rod to swapping pickups, these tweaks can dramatically improve playability and tone. I’ve even built several guitars from parts sourced from different manufacturers, creating unique “Frankenstein” guitars tailored to my exact needs.

This hands-on experience has also allowed me to breathe new life into neglected guitars—the ones collecting dust under beds or in closets because they’re too difficult to play. A simple adjustment can transform a frustrating instrument into an inspiring one. These projects have deepened my understanding of my playing style and given me the confidence to maintain and repair my instruments.

WHERE TO BUY AND WHAT TO LOOK FOR

Choosing the right instrument—whether for a beginner or an experienced player—can be overwhelming. Major retailers stock popular brands like Gibson, Fender, and PRS, but with so many shapes, colors, and configurations, the choices can be daunting. Local music stores, while more personal, often have a limited selection. Online shopping offers nearly endless options, but buying a guitar sight unseen comes with risks. You can choose based on color, wood grain, or weight, but you don’t get to feel the neck, hear its resonance, or test its playability before clicking “buy now.” In a music store, at least you can try before you buy—but how do you know what to look for or listen for if you’re just beginning?

A HELPING HAND FOR BEGINNERS

That’s where I come in. I take a personalized approach to helping beginners, parents, and even seasoned players find the perfect guitar. Whether it’s understanding the player’s age, preferred musical genre, or budget, I work to match each individual with an instrument that fits their unique needs. Having bought, sold, and maintained guitars for most of my life, I know what to look for and where to find it.

Much like breaking in a baseball glove to fit your hand, personalizing a guitar means fine-tuning its setup. Done properly, this makes the instrument feel like it was made just for you. If you’ve ever thought about starting your guitar journey— or helping someone else begin theirs—I’d love to be your guide. My experience gives me a unique perspective, allowing me to act as a sherpa for those wanting to climb the mountain of learning guitar. Whether you’re a parent looking for the right starter guitar for your child, an adult seeking guidance on a great instrument, or someone looking to expand their collection, I’m here to help. Let’s turn that spark of interest into a lifelong passion for music.
